I plant my roots, And near those roots I stay.. I don't feel it to be as absolutely imperative to rush the higher tier biomes for loots as other players seem to.
Reasons: By then I have a motorcycle which makes finding the biome I want and moving my current loot / farm much easier. And right around that time I am starting on tier 4 trader jobs, where the loot bonus from a higher biome really makes a difference. And moving right after the blood moon night gives you 7 days (or whatever your setting is) to set up shop in the new place before the next one.
a few days ago, I saw a radiated demolisher roaming around the poi I was looting, so you can only imagine how that went, luckily I survived, but when I went to get the main loot, out of NOWHERE, damn screamers started to spawn and as you may know, screamers spawn more zombies, and since im high leveled and my gamestage is near 200, yeah, that wasnt fun at all. I laughed, I cried, I ran like a little girl, I killed, I cameback got my loot, was scared for my life, and got on my motorcycle and got the hell out LOOOL #funtimes
The forest biome has such a low loot level for a very long time, even if you don't die and set back your game-stage. If you don't get good gear from the trader or questing, you kind of have to leave the starting area to get higher tier drops.
I don't really care about snow or desert. My latest map that I created, I got rid of the snow biome and made about 15% desert and 20% wasteland, and the rest is forest.
If you mean create a second base, that's much later. Usually after the day 14 horde. By then I've generally explored enough to know the lay of the new map, and have an idea where a good, central spot is, with access to all the biomes. Someplace where I can be near a trader, have a crafting base, and a horde base, and which has a place to plant trees that can fully grow, either a strip of dirt, or a nearby forest biome border.
Occasionally it will be after the day 21 horde, if progress is going slowly, as far as my construction abilities. I don't want to invest in a second base, that I'll have to rebuild heavily after a horde night, because I didn't have the resources, or knowledge. I'll stick with my older, one.
Basically I move when I can cleanly shift over and be ready to defend within the 7 day gap.
If it´s further away, it´s usually as soon as i got a minibike or motorcycle.
1. I can't see in the snow biomes nor the wasteland (worse). You cant see 2 feet in front of the gyro in either one of those. It's not a difficulty issue, it's a quality of life issue. Sheer annoyance.
2. The game doesn't offer incentive going into either biome. Coal Nitrate Iron and Lead are everywhere. I only go into the desert to get shale. Wasteland and snow biomes are basically useless as they exist today. I dont necessarily care about the better loot either, I've never been one to need that golden SMG nor DE .50. You get them in the forest biome when your GS/LS is high enough anyway.
As it sits I use 1/4 of the giant useless map. Even something as simple as... (making this up) Solar cells only spawn in wasteland loot, and coal only spawns in the snow biome loot... would give me a reason to explore the rest of the map my PC generated.
