For a serious answer I think it would be pretty hard to do in a regular game. There really is a lot of food if you look for it. And you don't fall over dead when your food hits zero.

I did a playthrough where I could only eat fruits and vegetables. So, that meant only canned peas and pears from the vending machine and everything else I had to forage or grow. It was a struggle for maybe the first in-game week or so and I spent a lot of time with food near 0. I ate a lot of yucca fruit. As soon as I had the recipe for vegetable stew the food problems were over. That's the only playthrough where food was really a challenge. That was in A19 though when farming was worth doing. I may give it another try in A21.

Hunger and thirst will not so fast kill you. However, it reduces your health and endurance. This might lead to situations were you die in a battel, due to battle-reasons that you would have survived without havin hunger or thirst.

So like, just watch all the rabbits and chickens run past, and ignore the food vending machines, and not put any points into survival skills, all while I'm starving? No, haven't tried that strategy.

ya it's been more than a few alphas since food/water was a real issue for early survival, deff not for mid or late..

If you are doing a non-trader/non-vending machine playthrough, maybe. But with A20, if you are near a large city at all, is hard to go hungry. Lots of Corn and some other crops.
I go master chef on my first 4. Never had that issue.

Yes, you could die from starving. You'd probably also have to forget the warnings about it, and be in the wasteland or something that has nothing growing. Even in snow you could get blueberries, and desert has yucca.....

The concept of food being a threat is illusory in this game and nothing more. It's probably a fun mechanic for newer players who are just learning the ropes and that's fine.

For the rest of us its mostly a point of tedium at this point. 25% loot doesnt really solve the endless meat problem either. That's okay though. The survival aspects of the game have trended downward in terms of difficulty for several alphas but its not the biggest deal. I just end up focusing on other things.

I do like the buffs you get from certain foods and meals . in fact i like certain receips go with your builds strength fort ect but yea def different from early days i hear the new alpha might have zobies eating your meat kills and water is suppose to be a lil more priority again well see

I only died from starving once in thousands of hours because I went AFK waiting for the forge. Or maybe I dehydrated. But if was starvation, it was only that once.
I still like the food mechanic though, even though it's not really a mortal threat. I like the immersion of the small maintenance for survival.

Previous alphas were certainly harder keep starvation away. Too easy right now.
Kind of miss the desperation of having to go loot a house without good equipment.

if you were starving and in danger of your health hitting 0, you can always eat the "old Sham sandwich" or rotten meat, or anything similar that you normally wouldn't eat, but would keep you from starving to death until you could find some real food.

Since A10 the only time I starved to death is when I was mining huge caverns in A10-A12 and I lost sight of eating/drinking in favor of swinging a pickaxe. and staring at the center of the screen. eg, I didn't notice until my chr. keeled over and I would be like, "wut? oh, yeah." :steammocking:

If you'd really push for it and put in much dedication you might be able to achieve that with quite some effort. (even at 25% loot this would be a real challenge.)

Not since A13/14 where I once spent too much time in a snow biome at night where I ran through calories quickly trying not to freeze to death. (back then, when weather mechanics actually did something noticeable)

And even then it was just a close call, and I managed to get to food just in time.

No, I always pause the game and go eat a cheeseburger before it gets that bad.
