how many players can i have on a server at a time? looking to start a community server

The officially supported maximum is 8; The default settings in a dedicated will let you go as high as 16, but it's unstable at that point and gets more so if you force it higher via modding.

Unless you have a REALLY good server PC, like top of the line big budget, It'd likely be a bad move to go over 12~ at the most. This hasn't stopped some servers from going up to 100, but, well, they get the problems that comes with that of their own volition and more power to em.

None that I'm personally aware of. It's a small scale co-op game intended for 1-8 players, not a big MMP game where they expect dozens or hundreds of players per server.

That isn't to say they won't polish up the server architecture for 1-8 players, which would still be beneficial to servers with larger player counts.. But I wouldn't expect anything over 32 to ever be particularly viable, and that being with an exceptional dedicated server PC to run it.
