Priority 1 should always be make bandages. Look for white flowers (cotton) pick them as you do your opening quests. Craft them into cloth and make bandages. Bandages stop you bleeding out.

Priority 2. Make cloth armour. Not as easy as priority 1 since you need duct tape and therefore an element of luck. Pick more white flowers, make more cloth, cloth plus duct tape can be crafted into cloth armour. Cloth armour reduces the risk of bleeding out when hit.

Any glue you find can be made into duct tape. Cloth plus glue equals duct tape. Duct tape plus more cloth equals armour. One piece of armour is better than none. I always start with body armour, then arms, then legs, then boots, then head. I don't know if thats the right way to do it, just the way I do.

Pick your fights carefully and don't use stone axe as a weapon.

Im on day 11 and have only had the bleed effect 3 times to me being silly when doing a poi by not making sure i have room to back away from the zombies to stagger them out of being grouped up.

Yep. And tbh you are right. You don't have to fight everything early game. Pick your opponents. Pick the ground you want to fight on. Fight carefully if you don't have armour. Avoid multiple enemies,. Move in deliver a blow, retreat, reposition, repeat until the z is on the floor. Move up the side and smack it in the head as it tries to get back up.

Make bandages from cotton. Death from bleed is not something that should be happening. At most you should lose about 15 health while the bandage animation plays.

Also, I am on day 20 of my second playthrough and I'm not getting bleed any more than I used to in A20. Maybe two or three times so far, when I get careless and let a dog or bird surprise me and hit me three times in a row.

I've had one bleed out and I'm at day 7. Was my own fault, misjudged the distance between myself and a z dog. Was too slow swapping between bow (I missed) and stone sledgie. So spent a small amount of time back peddling waiting for weapon to appear in hand. That was enough time for the dog to get a hit in. My own arrogance and complacency. Didn't give the dog the respect I shoulda.

Use spears. Stab at them from the depths of hell. Or from well behind a hatch.

Carry bandages (or first aid bandages) on your toolbelt, not in your inventory, so you can apply them quickly.

This 100%

If you keep getting hit reconsider your weapon choice, maybe move to a spear with a longer reach or even a bow using sneak always on your 1st hit.

Early game you need to move cautiously and carefully.

ALOT of the game is learning from your mistakes and finding out what the game offers that can help you.

If youve done anything 6 times and died its simply time to stop doing that.

I think a better way to frame it, on difficulty 2 in scrap armor the zombies only hit for like 4 damage, but the bleed can do like 30+ damage a second. Maybe its more of the fact that you have to basically drop everything and run to bandage. Perhaps the idea of changing it to a specific zombie type applies bleed and you have to keep an eye out for it, like its just 100% chance per hit from it.

lol if a zombie blunt force punch is going to potentially make you bleed out can you imagine the internal damage that must have occurred? good thing a bandage will stop all that. lol

I think the bleed might cause damage a little too quick. I feel like it should take a couple seconds before it even starts the damage over time. So it still forces you to tend to it quickly but doesn't do 20 damage before you can react.
