You need an (active) sleeping bag to stop zombie spawns in a limited area around it. If you settled in a POI you need first to be sure you cleared it completely and also place a Land Claim Block.

If your base is bigger than the area covered by the no-spawn bed area, then you're in for some unexpected visits.

If your base is too big, and/or you don't have your bed there/your bed's anti-spawn protection decayed, zombies will start spawning on your base.

You have several ways around that:
1. Renew your bed. Pick it up and put it back down. That should restart the spawn protection.
2. Or put that protection block you've received at spawn. It has greater area of spawn prevention, and has greater spawn block duration before it is decayed.
3. If your base is that humongous, I'd suggest modifying the max amount of simultaneous protection blocks(up to 3-4), max out their reach size and remove the decay.

If you are mining near your base then you can spawn in a screamer. These screamers will spawn more zombies in which case one or two can spawn in your base. It's happened to me quite a few times.

Far as I understand, zombies wont spawn on player-made blocks like wood frames and their upgrades. So go to town paving the world over. I'm paranoid so I even pave the floors of my mines (hey free xp).

I'm having to do that to my horde base. Covering over where zombies can respawn can reduce the numbers by a lot.

You can cheese the game mechanics and make a 100% horde elimination base, for example by placing it in the center of a big lake. Zombies wont spawn on/in water blocks, and horde zombies only spawn within a certain radius.

LCBs only prevent RE-spawns of the sleeper system.

If you have a big base the best thing to do is lay out blocks everywhere. They don´t spawn on player made blocks. Not sure about dirt, topsoil and such though.
