OR, they could introduce a set of "hybrid" talents. Like, Agility + perception, unlocks throwing Knives. Str + Fort unlocks ballistic hammers, Perception + Int unlocks Magnetic rail guns ect ect
Hah, that's a good point.
With spears you only have one, or maybe just a couple, but with knives you could have a stack of 50 or 100. So knives could actually be a little bit different than Spears since they're just for throwing and you don't have to worry about them having separate durabilities, if that's the way they chose to implement them.
I don't see that ever happening but I'm always down for a new weapon type. It could be part of the archery/agility line. Sounds cool to me.
I don't think throwing knives would even have a melee if they were added right. They would work basically like bows, click to "build power" as your character pulls their arm back for a throw, release to throw. Right click to zoom a little bit or "aim down sights." Character could hold the knife up in front of their eyes like a crosshair until you start to wind up.
They could differentiate from bows by either being far more expensive than arrows to craft, but doing way more damage, or way less expensive than arrows to craft but do way less damage at a super high attack rate. (the throwing knife double throw!)
And throws like a grenade in a arc, meaning you have to aim carefully to gauge the trajectory.
And a untrained thrower will have wider cone of aim than a good thrower. (Crosshair is bigger, and the size adjusts itself randomly as you hold the aim down)
A trained thrower will have a better crosshair to gauge throwing effectiveness. (more accurate crosshair, will gain better accuracy and stay consistent while aiming)
You can probably throw other things you make, and there is a limit to the stack.
Throwing Knives = Smaller than hunting knives, almost like a slim bone knife, stacks up to 15. Left click to do a weak stab, but gain no benefits from knife skills. Hold Right click to aim and release to throw, press R to cancel.
Throwing Axes = About the size of your stone axes, maybe smaller, stacks up to 5. Left click to slash like a stone axe, right click to aim and throw, R to cancel.
Leather Sling = Uses rocks/stone as projectiles, left click swings the sling with rock in it like a melee weapon, holding right click aims while you twirl the sling, the crosshair actually expands and shrinks rapidly back and forth meaning you have to get the timing right to release it.
Throwing Spears = small short spears that are slim and narrow with a weighted tip, throws using the same previous spear throwing system, but counts as a 'throwable' weapon not a spear. You can left click to do a weak stab with it when in a pinch. Stacks up to 10 in a slot.
Staff Sling = A long range sling mounted to a long pole, requires a well trained user to make use of it, has the best range and attack damage, but the hardest to utilize in close range. Can be used to swing and hit enemies with left click in a pinch. Uses stone as ammo.
In fact there's far far more numerous types of 'throwing' weapons to the point where if you'd even want a skill tree for it or not.
But the cheapest sort of 'throwing' weapon would be the slingshot.

Strength would be a measure of 'equipping' different classes of guns without a debuff.
Fortitude would be 'maintenance' of gun parts, and Intelligence would be 'ammo crafting'.
Yeah, Undead Legacy has all sorts of cool stuff. I would love if Subquake (The modder) added that skill.
