Are we supposed to lose items on death?

I have lost a few items on death from my hotbar since returning and don't remember that happening before. I just died and lost everything my hotbar this time. Surely that's not supposed to happen right?

The standard setting when creating a new world is losing everything, hotbar and backback.
You can also set it to only backpack, only hotbar or lose nothing.
You can change the setting before logging into your world, give it a look.

Drop on death is set to EVERYTHING. Why would my hotbar items not be there? Thanks

Do you mean when you respawn or when you pick up the stuff in your backpack? The default is that when you die, everything you have on you (inventory and hotbar) are placed in a backpack where you died. If you go back to your backpack and open it and do a take all (default is R) then everything is put back where it was including the stuff in your hotbar.

Ah now i understand, the hotbar items were missing when you picked up the fallen backpack?
Thats strange, they should be in there.

Ahh, I've got a bug then. There's nothing there from my hotbar at all. Poof...its not in my inventory or anything. And I've tried logging out and back in too. I lost my leg armor too.

Had that happen to me as well today. Everything from the hotbar and what i had equipped wasnt in the backpack.

I remember something similar happening several years ago.

the problem then was mods that increased the size of the backpack. although that was fixed long ago, it would be interesting to know if the people affected by this were using similar mods. maybe an old bug has been resurrected.

There was a time where when you "took all" from backpack, things were NOT auto-placed in the hotbar, only the backpack. So if your inventory was full and your hot bar was full, you did not have actual inventory room for all of it and some things would be lost because of this, as "take all" exploded the dropped pack out of existence. I used to avoid doing the "take all" for that reason.

I haven't died in a long time (I play really casually/mostly sandbox lately) so I don't even remember if things are auto-place in the hotbar now. I would hope so.
