Because I think that the non-crafted one have variable stats, so there are good ones and bad ones. I always remember when JaWoodle finally found the T6 steel knuckles in the fist only 2 series... only for it to be worse than their T5.
Not sure about the crafted ones. Never craft more to check.
In A20 happened several times, both having really good ones and finding terrible ones.
I have found that crafted weapons and armour do have variable stats. I crafted 3 hunting rifles, 2 had a effective range of 80 and 1 was 59. Also the damage varied a small amount.
But it's kind of nice that there is a variety of bladed weapons. Kind of like the compound crossbow and the compound bow. The compound bow doesn't hit quite as hard and it's harder to aim, but it shoots a lot faster than the compound crossbow.
Sure I am in the minority though. gotta strive for those higher numbers...
What you wish to do and what you should do, are often very different.
For slightly better consistency I first grabbed several of each, then compared and kept only the best of each...though the variance was generally pretty small for most.
Most of the weapons had a small hit to stamina when changing to steel, except the knives where the hit to stamina was huge.
Most of the weapons had the same/similar swing speed, except the knives where the steel was significantly slower.
Most of the weapons had a significant PowerAttack damage increase from lvl6-iron to lvl1-steel, then a similar increase from lvl1-steel to lvl6-steel...except the clubs which had a very small increase, and the knives which had a decrease in damage.
It also appears to be true that the machete doesn't knock-down enemies with power-attacks while the HuntingKnife and most other melee weapons do.
Even comparing lvl6 VS lvl6 (iron to steel) the knives only gain about 9damage to their power attack, while losing significant speed, stamina and knockdown.
I didn't really test if the wide swing of the machete hits multiple targets, because the short-ish range often means getting close enough to hit multiple targets also gets you hit by one or more of them...and it doesn't knock them down like the sledge or most other weapons.
I hope this is a glitch/oversight and I hope it gets fixed soon (because I just started a fresh playthrough yesterday that focuses on knives).
