For the traders put some points into Daring Adventurer so they have rarer items to sell.
INT build with better barter and Daring adventurer is the only acceptable build off the start now.
You must put your base on the edge of a big city anyway to get books, just pray there is more than one trader in range. maps that don't have more than one trader aren't nearly as viable as being able to shop at multiple traders in the 3 day window.
I bought one from a trader in A21 already (15k dukes base price). It's not very common. So reaching the steel tier (where you have steel en mass) is not a sure thing at day X. You can get much steel ingots from the traders and from some items like gas pumps. Not enough to build a base as big as a plane carrier out of steel, though. But it's enough to build steel weapons and armors for example.
1 point in engineering is helpful, to get those weighted magazine drops then just hit every mail/news box, hardware store, and bookstore. And then of course loot every destroyed crafting station you find - work benches, cement mixers, forges, etc which very often has the magazine. There are 5 of those at every trader, plus construction sites, garages, etc. You can also run through tier 1 trader jobs, which commonly give magazine bundles.
75 seems like a lot but they add up quick.
Then again Fergit'n Elixer is only 6k dukes. Spend a few points into INT, get lvl 2 or 3 in both Adv Eng and Lock Picking and you'll have 75 magazines in no time. Then repec and get back the points.
Ah yes, my bad. 50 was the chemistry station. Thanks for the correction.
So far got the crucible every game LONG before i reached that high in the skill from a trader so my memory clearly was wrong.
I got to make my own around day 45-50 I think.
Or yes, you can get lucky with the vendors.
With double rewards i usually pick it as the second one.
Even before i got a Crucible i had like 600 forged steel in storage + you get them from vending machines and fuel pumps and a bunch of other items when tearing them down with a wrench or higher tier salvaging tool.
But i also have a nearly exclusive trader/quests focused play style and do them nonstop.
