Pipe Rifle or Pipe Machinegun?

Machine gun will save your ass against dogs and ferals. Rifle is good for sniping far targets or hunting chickens and rabbits.

Machinegun, unless you're perk(ing) with Perception, then do Rifle. They really boosted rifle headshot damage in A21.

Machine gun if you are doing Fort and/or go spray-n-pray when attacked.

Rifle if you are going perception and have calmer nerves (grab penetrator, too).

Absolutely pipe machine gun. The reload on the rifle is so long you'll be dead before taking a second shot.

Depends on how good you are and your play style, but rule of thumb in general, sure ok.

With the right weapon mods, you can eventually spec a sniper rifle into what is essentially an auto shotgun, only with multiple target penetratration, armor penetration, and massive headshot damage bonus.

When you do POIs, everything is in close-quarters. A single-shot rifle (especially if you miss) is a huge disadvantage.

"Eventually" you can have a T6 smg and clear rooms of zombies in seconds. Doesn't do much good when you only have the ingredients to make either a pipe rifle or machinegun.

first gun is melee everything, except you need a gun in case of emergency.
in an emergency, you want a machine gun.

Second gun can be "how much damage per ounce of gunpowder am I getting?"
but the one you take into the bad places should only focus on how much damage can it do per second, sustained.

Always machinegun. I don't even use it as an automatic weapon, I scope it and take single shots, but it's better than the rifle even for that.

Absolutely the pipe machine gun over the pipe rifle. Pipe rifle is single shot and has a reload time of "easily long enough to ensure you're dead before reloading".

Later in the game you might have a place for a gun with a low rate of fire (f it also has a very high damage per shot) but in the early game that's too much of a drawback. In the early game (at least) your main weapon will be melee. The main scenario for your gun in early game will be "It's all gone wrong!" situations and in those situations you're better off being able to fire more bullets more quickly and with less reloading. A gun you're reloading is worse than useless to you. It's not even usable as a club in the game. It just makes you an easier target.

The pipe machine gun is way better than the other pipe weapons. I really don't like the imbalance of the pipe weapons.

I probably would take the old purple pipe machine gun with a drum magazine and upgrades over a magnum, shotgun or sniper rifle. Especially before they nerfed the lower tier weapons.
