A21: metals should be mostly biome specific
Given the game is trying to ah e a progression (which I like), it seems to me that each different type of metal should be available only on specific biomes or higher.

So for example, forest would mostly have pipes. Desert would have pipes and forged irons. Snow would have everything. Wasteland had everything but also in much greater quantities.

Such things could be controlled via biome-specific POIs (already there, ut many are shared) and perhaps the POI could auto tune itself to the biome it spawns in (already exists).

NO.

A21 already has a big block to progress; adding another one of not being able to progress due to not having metals from a certain biome you haven't found yet is a bad idea.

You could try the Darkness Falls mod and see if you still like the idea after playing with it. I don't think DFalls is available for A21 yet (or for the next while), but I think it's mining by biome works this way:
Grassland: Iron Coal Nitrate
Desert: Shale Iron ?
Snow: Lead Nitrate Coal
Wasteland: Titanium Uranium Plutonium

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was, is lost, for none now live who remember it. But there are those among us who would venture into these dark lands, to find what once was lost, and awaken an enemy who has long been forgotten.

It's been done that way before, eg: nitrate was snow biome only for a while. The current version has an embarrassing amount of all ores. As for biome specific POI's: it is a little cringe to find full size logs in a desert lumbermill....

18 wheelers exist... A lumber mill does not have to be next to a forest. We have aluminium foundry here and they bring the material by boat from thousands of kilometers away.

I feel like big rock outcroppings are much rarer now in the pine biome. I can never find one when I am starting a new game, and have to waste time either searching for individual stones, or whacking on the half-size boulders.

You know there is rock everywhere bellow you, right at the 4th layer under dirt.

used to be that way, with iron being in all of them also. madmole didn't like the amount of work it required to find it. so easy mode ores all over the place with a giant indicator above ground. i'd like to claim that was sarcasm... just wish he didn't like looting things so much.

This is very different from wager my post was about. It really shows me that your neither read nor understood what I said, and I suspect everyone saying NO is at your level of non-understanding.

I am talking about progression, not idiotic gates.

Each tier of tools/weapons should be specific to a biome, and this each material required to craft it should be the same.

This is such a basic game design aspect that it’s insane to even have to discuss it. The devs have been trying to balance their game for a decade, and they will continue to fail until they tie progression to looting/crafting, exactly as they did in A21. But A21 didn’t go far enough.

What I suggest is really the only way to even attempt to balance the game.

As I said... Valheim does exactly that, and I hate it.

I don't want to have to move my base amd my 15 crates full of resources and items to a new biome 4 times...

caling others idiots when you are blinded by your own goggles. Biome specific materials hinders all players, skillset excluded. Not everyone can uncover the whole map to find a biome much less have the skill to play in wasteland levels of zeds. Your idea from any gameplay standpoint is not too well thought out. A solution was given but of course the one who suggested it according to you is an idiot.

I don't like the idea,
And yes, sounds like Valheim... aka Viking Truck Simulator.
