Can't fill in ground hole

I've come back from a long hiatus and can no longer figure out how to fill in a hole dug or "repair" the ground. My husband ended up just making the hole bigger :p
Everything I search for on google seems outdated, or we are really just messing this up somehow.

With the material that you dig from the ground you can craft a block of ground. Soil something? I don't remember the name right now.

Craft blocks of Topsoil and fill the holes with them.

Give your husband a nuggie, them within 10 seconds chuck it all in the hole.

This wont fill the hole but you have an excuse to give your partner a nuggie.

I fill the holes all the time with dirt after I do mining. Crafting soil with clay, that's the way to go. Just click on the clay and choose the dirt under the recipes.

Damaged ground can be repaired with a axe, hammer or other building tool. Basically the way you repair your base is the same way you repair damaged ground.
Note: this only repairs damaged ground. Once you actually have a hole then use what the others above have mentioned.

I tried to fill the hole with topsoil, but it ends like an extra levitating diamond soil on top of the hole. I am trying to burry a chest. Strange, it was working before...
