Surely you need a story before story progression can be broken?
I am missing the citys, but I like not having traders, just trying to survive on what i find. I think that is a more challenging and fun way of playing it.
Self-control, maybe?
If you really want, you can remove the inventory and restock option of the traders.
Or you could change their inventory and restock to be a quantity of 1 and something worthless like paper.
Edit:
If you feel like their compound is just taking up space, you can make it destructible or just change it yourself to a specific POI, or just make it blank.
I imagine OP is doing exactly that, but would enjoy having the option to make it more immersive. The same way hardcore players would enjoy having the option for a forced hardcore play through, despite having the self control to start over with out it.
Or in a real world sense, I can drink coffee from a red solo cup, but I rather drink it from a mug.
Neither would reasonably filling a red solo cup and holding it with a claw grip. :P
Also, the pregenerated map that is the largest size, has no traders.
Also, I think you can go into the xml files and just delete the traders.
