nerfed traps and pathing
I think nerfing the wooden spike traps and barbed wire fence alone was enough, I think pathing zombies to avoid them along with mines was bad design. These traps still had some application but in their current state they are only good for steering zombies which seems pointless. Might as well have just removed them and left early gamers with nothing.

They don't purposefully avoid spikes.

Zombies don't acknowledge traps as anything but blocks to path on, or through. To them it's all either a wall, or open space.

What they DO do, however, Is avoid walls when there's a perfectly viable alternative. And they also prefer taking the least block-HP path to the player.

So, When you make a 1 tall row of spikes, Zombies consider it to be a low fence, and will probably jump on it. When you make it 2 tall, however, You've built a solid wall- At least in their eyes.

When you've made a row of spikes 2 blocks tall, The first couple zombies will stumble into spikes, and then once a sufficient opening has been made, The rest will path to that opening because it is now the lowest-block-HP path to the player-To them, any other path that would take them into the 'wall' takes longer, and thereby, is not worth going to.

So basically, Don't just build a solid wall of spikes. You need to place them on the floor- Even better, place them set 1 or 2 tiles into the ground so the zombies consider the spikes to be 'floor' and will walk right onto it.

Basically if zombies have no easier path to you they will definitely walk through the trap. Classic examples are putting a spike trap in a POI doorway when looting, or all around the entrance to a mine, when you are in it.

Removing them would probably not make most people happy.

Always dig holes and put spike traps so their tops are level with the rest of the floor or ground. A 1 block "fence" is nearly as bad as a 2 block high wall.

@Shurenai: I don't think many players use 2 block high walls of traps. Most just put 1 block traps on the floor and because of the see-through look of the spike traps imagine the zombies just walk through that trap without stepping up.
I know because I made the same judgement error at first and I have heard many complaints from other players making exactly the same mistake.

Even though zombies visibly jump when they have to go through such a trap many don't notice. The hint is there in plain sight.
