Which vehicle do you craft - and is the truck worth it?
At first I was rather excited about the biciycle and aimed at crafting it, but until I had enough wheels, it was already time for the minibike.

Do you even craft the bike since wheels are rare, or do you save them up for a later vehicle?

Having the truck sounds great. Then I encountered streets with huge potholes in them. It was no problem to drive around them with the minibike. I think this might be a problem with the car. Areas like Wasteland must be even harder to cross, aren't they?

Is it worth saving up for the truck or is it better to go for the motorcycle instead?

Motorcycle goes faster, truck has more storage.
I use the motorcycle for quick runs and I use the truck when I am clearing a large building. I also use the Gyrocopter for recon....

All the vehicles are too slow for me, so I change the top speed in the xml files.
After trying them all in earlier games I only craft the mini bike and the gyrocopter, I don't need anything else.

In which situations do you have to recon?

You can make all of them and chose which one you like, getting resources in this game is too easy.

I mean, I generally have the bicycle by level 5ish. The higher tier vehicles are always worth it for the carry space.

You can craft wheels. Also holding "shift" makes the vehicles go faster than regular (I didn't know it at first), but the bicycle uses more stamina in that mode. If you put a few skill points in stamina recovery, it can be somewhat quick with barely any stamina consumption. Another plus side is that it doesn't need fuel.
The minibike is a small improvement but uses fuel. The motorcycle has spikes on it and can ram and throw zombies away, but it doesn't seem to really hurt them. For me it was a great feeling to drive it and listen to the individual sounds of the engine.
I haven't tried the more advanced vehicles yet, but I look forward to them :)

Since lack of fuel usually wasn't a problem yet, I'd say that the motorcycle is my favourite so far.

With every vehicle, holding shift without holding W can maintain the movement speed without consuming stamina. Great for downhills, but is also prevents losing that extra speed when letting go of shift.

Bicycle is ok until I can craft something better, it gets the job done. I use it 5% of the time.

The mini bike, I am not so big on it, its one of the vehicles I rarely craft. I use it 0% of the time.

The motorcycle, Its not that its faster, but it fits in smaller areas, it just feels faster, its a heck of a lot of fun to use. However it has the smaller inventory and no second seat. so I only use it 10% of the time.

I love the 4x4, I like the inventory space, I like that when looting or questing with a partner, I have that extra seat for them. I use it 70% of the time.

They Gyrocopter, I use it to recon the mop, get the layout of the towns, find traders, scout for interesting POI's. I use it the remaining 15% of the time.

I craft and use all of the vehicles as soon as I can. I'll make the bike, then the motorcycle, and so on up the line. I always keep at least one spare vehicle in storage at my base in case I have to make a corpse run.

In my current solo game I have two motorcycles, two trucks and two gyrocopters. I would say I use the truck most of the time. It's my main workhorse for when I'm out on loot runs, just randomly seeing where the day brings me, or doing trader quests. If I'm out just beating up rocks or on a resource run I usually take the motorcycle. The only time I really use the gyrocopter is when I just want to make a quick run from my base to one of my traders to turn in a quest or do some bartering with them.

The main reason I keep two of each is so my brother also has vehicles when he visits my world.

I mean, the bicycle's main purpose is to be obtained early to avoid the encumberance penalties. Better to fill your own inventory so you move at a crawl and just move around via bike than leave valuable stuff behind or risk getting swarmed with that low speed. The minibike being just a step up to avoid the calorie burning and hunger inducing effects of a stamina driven vehicle.

About encumberance and the bike: I was told there is a trick. If you put stuff into bikes and then draw the bikes into your inventory, supposedly they keep their own inventory. I haven't tested it though, but it sounds like a possible way to almost double the backpack with a few bikes, also preventing you from moving at a turtle's speed.

I don't believe you can pick them up with items in it, the option to do so isn't there. Either way, its something that would likely break the game after awhile so I wouldn't recommend it even if you could.

bike. go to the middle of nowhere on horde night. let horde spawn. head back to my base. I used to build underground bases and all that, felt survival-ish. now I cheese everything

Bicycle should only be used until you get a minibike. Minibike is okay for short-distance recons and minor looting, but it's slow. Motorcycle's good for long-distance recon and travel, as it's fastest. Gyrocopter means no ground combat, but watch for vultures if you're injured. 4x4 is good if you need to haul a lot, but it's a bit slower than the bike, bounces more, and doesn't turn as well - but it still fits on your tool belt if you don't store anything in it. Gotta love TFP's quantum physics shrink move, there. :)
