That can't be true because lan support is in the game from the start and was never removed.
Open a multiplayer game, set a password. Finished.
For me and my roommate that always worked. I am not sure about consoles because i have none.
Yeah, and it should work!.. even with cross cable. The game have no idea about interfaces network structures or anything. It's just trying to communicate with another ip.
Or that is how it should be at least...
