If you've done a lot in that area/biome before, your heatmap may be high. That includes forges, campfires, killing zeds, and a lotta other stuff. Maybe somebody else will elaborate on it a bit further. But when your heatmap gets high enough, screamers can spawn. If they spot you, they will scream and summon more zeds with a good chance to get feral ones.
it's usually best to keep your forge/cooking area away from your main base, or where you'll be hiding at night.
1) They won't ever shut up.
2) They may actually make my base collapse into the water.
I didnt know about this. My first experience with this game was on public server ( colbot, cobalt?) , i thought it was a server thing to prevent us from fully pausing the game. I wish i could play alpha 13 with the updated zombies animation and texture wise.
Make yourself a bow and some arrow asap. Stay ranged until you get yourself some better gear.
Don't bother with the log spikes, wooden spikes are the ones you want they do much more damage.
If you are on single player you can turn the running at night off and if you like, turn the difficulty down a little until you are used to everything. Just have a play around with your settings until you're happy with how they are.
2. Screamers. Kill them FIRST. Every time they do that scream they summon even more zombies. Take them out asap.
3. Roaming hordes. Occasionally a few zombies will group and will pass through an area, making a "sort of" bee-line to your current location. They don't know where you are, unlike the 7th day horde. They just head in an approximate direction. They're easily avoidable unless you're making a load of noise. Digging, for instance.

Watch his full videos if you have the time. He's one of the Devs of the game.
I just got attacked and killed by a dog just before sunset , day 1
I was in wasteland tho.
any zed & horde on the map is heading your direction... doesnt matter where you are.. on top of a very high tower, or deep underground... they "know" you are there and will converge on the spot which is -YOU- , it doesnt matter if you are in your own "hotspot" or in a new place on the map where nobody went before :)
They will hang around and (re-)converge the whole time during the Bloodmoon. -Which is why there are so many of them still around when the moon sets.
And if you are spotted (or heard) or do something stupid like coming out of "hiding" to fight them, they will ALWAYS be dragged back to you... they even start digging...
You can sometimes even see that happening...: They wander off like they would on any other day.. but the game "pulls them back" to your location... it is kind of a rubberband effect, even more noticable when you are +40 days in and LOTS of feral hordes get spawned near your location.
On a bloodmoon, unless you are camping out very silently, very high or very deep or behind triple-thick steel walls... you are very likekly to become lunch :)
You can not swing fast enough or change clips fast enough to keep them at bay whne you are solo and unprotected.
It DOES make for some epic fights thou, if you are in a relative secure base with some friends and the "endless horde" effect kicks in... :) You only have to hope you have enough ammo, so you dont have to go melee. You'ld be amazed how fast you go through a 1000 rounds of 7.62 when the endless horde on/after a bloodmoon happens :)
they do not know exactly where you are anymore, that ♥♥♥♥ was taken out some time ago i have no idea why, LOL. But yeah, they turn semi feral so they can see through walls to a point, underground bases(bed rock) now will avoid the horde entirely. As long as your entrance is somewhere away from where you are hiding, as the zombies will just stop on top of where you were when the horde started. Ive tested this multiple times in current patch and have seen many streamers confirming the same thing. The horde is also comprised of specially freshly spawned zombies, not zombies from areas surrounding you. As each 7th day passes more zombies come, up to a 300-350 i think then it resets back to the first tier horde on the next 7th day.
