Also how would I then use it to fill 4e hole please.
I presume you're refering to Dirt Fragments that you get when digging up soil? Click on it in your inventory, and then select recipes. You can then craft various ground blocks from it such as Burnt Forest Ground, Forest Ground, Grassy Ground, Plains Ground and Sod, among other things.
You can then take these blocks and place them like any other block. The upside is that you can get quite a bit of Miscellaneous Crafting XP, and by Day 36 in one game, I max'd out the skill at 100. Basically, when I wasn't crafting anything manually, I just started crafting ground to be doing something while being able to do other things.
