Fastest way to get iron
Hello,

As the title says, I want iron and lots of it, where is the easiest and fastest way to get it?

mining or taking apart cars. The crisscrossed metal you see on the ground in the wasteland.

As above and, Miner69er + Steel Pickaxe + dig rock = lots of steel and lots of rocks for concrete

Especially if you find ore veins

As above, if you're looking for bulk iron, fastest way to get loads is via iron ore, found in ore veins which can be located bisecting caves or just generally in the ground. Get your mining skills up to the point where you can 1-hit the iron ore using a steel/iron pickaxe or use an auger for max efficiency. You should be able to get several thousand iron via this method.

For mining a late learned tip is to dig diagonally down to 'bedrock', ie., where you can no longer dig. Then start sending out tunnels in various directions. You will hit ore sooner than you think.

Also, if while digging down you hit a vein, don't hesitate to follow it through the rock and come back to your diagonal-to-bedrock tunnel later.

Breaking the fence down around the radio tower, car yard, waterworks poi's is a good place to get iron. Or the shop shelves in the two or three story brick buildings. Other than that it does build up quite well when you start a tunnel system.

Good points.

The Water Plant/Treatment Plant and a set of Wrenches will take you very far.

No one has mentioned the girders in wasteland? I always try and build our first base near some wasteland as there are tons of girders and concrete blocks everywhere. Everything you need to get started. Concrete, iron and then steel. It's a crime not find some wasteland early.

In the early game, boulders give you iron. They also give you stone that you can use to make stone axes, shovels and arrows. You dont need anything special. Make stone axes and shovels and put 1-5 or more into construction tools. You will need it for the steel skill later anyway. Scavaging is good but you really need water and a few other items at the begining.

Clay patches often have boulders and extra plants.

That will yield enough more iron than is easily processed by a single forge,

If you are staying in one place early on, you will probably run out of boulders, and things to scavange.

When you have forged iron, the pickaxe is a better tool but it's associated with mining tools not construction. Mining iron ore is faster but you have to find a cave or dig.

Metal objects take too much time to smash up. If you have wrenches or can make them, that might be an option but it still requires you to find locations.

Don't they only give like 2 iron per? I remember a good while ago that they were great for iron but since everything have been converted to just iron now they don't really give that much.

I have got 3 per with a decent steel pick when you can harvest them 1 hit.

3 per Swing is pretty bad -- can get 15 per swing on Iron Rocks or 39ish per swing in an Ore Vein.

Yeah, sort of backs up my opinion that they're crap. I mean if if you're at the point where you have a steel pick you should be digging a mine. Only 3 per resource means you need to find 33+ of those girders just to make a stack of 100 iron. That's honestly pitiful and a far cry from what they used to provide before the simplification of the materials.

You take what you can get. Scrap is a god send especially when you can dig and go through a few steel pickaxes and come out with nothing. Its all luck when it comes down to it. Also you can harvest cars but its also a trade off if you have loot respawn as you lose a lootable source. My only method is to break down rocks, break down non lootable cars, cave diving, and last just blow holes in the ground till you find a vein.

Caves. Crazy amount of everything you need.
