5x5 areas with light holes in middle of each one going up to surface
I honestly don't know if crops can grow underground anymore, without modification.
I had built an above ground tower with glass and one level was a farm - everything grew fine .
There will be the new "sleeper" zombies before long, and I think they've been changing the indoors/caves to be pretty dark these days (even if it's bright daylight outside when you walk into a house), as well as reduced artificial light radius, perhaps to hide them more when they're finally added.
So maybe you need a lot more "light" holes than before to make up for it.
Or maybe since they altered crops so much (corn only works on tilled ground now, like everything else) it just doesn't work. Maybe I'll set up a test game for it. I'd be curious myself.
A single light-shaft seems to cover quite a large area, but it is not square. More of a hexagon (or fat star) shape. I was going to give a ♥♥♥ but imgur is not behaving this morning...so as an example if you have a 10x11 space and have a single hole about in the middle, it would turn most squares green but miss the far corners. So best square-shape coverage for planning shaft spacing/rooms might be 7x7.
Anyway...will test other blocks tomorrow.
I made a nice drug lord laboratory of corn/potatoes down at bedrock and 1 shaft per 5x5 was just fine. Although, I left the hole at the top wide open, and just put a hay bale at the bottom in case of accidents.
I see you mention corn in your picture...corn was changed and needs fertile soil like everything else now.
So that might be some of your issue.
I did notice when I only had one hole in center that the area grass grew was a circle which makes sense I suppose. Added more holes and tried different coverings but had to log for the night so will test more tonight. :)
Glad to hear it's working for some folks! Gives hope.
Also if it helps...the game does have light intensity values...and in the past at least, certain crops needed certain amounts...
The square under the light might be good for crop X, but the lit tiles farthest away dont get enough light...
Certain biomes used to have different possible amounts I think as well...and trees might affect it...all things to check out or look for I guess.
Sorry I cant give more accurate, current info on it.
Made it on bedrock, waaaaay below surface in a snow biome.
And only 1 hole in the middle, all the way up. No iron bars or glass.
Planted corn, and after some days, they started to grow. Only the plants in each corner did not seem to grow.

Tomorrow, gonna try a bigger room, to see just how big a circle 1 hole of light can give.
