How to repair iron/steel tools?

I have been trying to figure out how to repair iron or steel tools. I have an iron pickaxe that depleted. When i try to use it it just says its broken and needs to be fixed. I am not sure the process on how you fix an existing tool VS making a new one. I created forged iron and when i try to craft it to "fix" the current one, it just creates a new one instead. How do you repair tools instead of recrafting them over and over?

Click the item while in your menu (crafting menu, character menu). Then hit repair while having the required item in your inventory/bag. Personally, I just make a new one because exp. xD I know you get some exp reparing things, but unsure if repairing gives more exp or crafting a whole new tool. Uh, yes you can. Make sure you have iron or steel -bars- in your inventory, select the tool in the inventory screen, then click Repair

Fair enough. Though tossing the old outdated tools into the forge to reclaim some of the materials is also a valid move. Make a better pick than what you have? toss the old one in and recycle it. Win.

If you got the materials you should scrap the old one and make a new one. If you try to repair it you'll lose quality depending on your fixing skill but never get the same quality as before, so not worth it IMO.

I was reading on it and the dev said that the reason you would want to repair over create a new one is its half the cost of materials to repair. So i guess if your low on materials then repairing would be better, and vice versa for if you have a lot of materials.

I was actually playing on xbox one. Though i own this on steam as well. But all the videos showed the PC, and i guess the xbox one is a little different. You have to get info on the tool when you have forged iron in your inventory, and then you can get the option to repair via directional arrows.
