Nope. You limit your level cap with every book read and skill point spent on use gain skills. I scrap books when they are known for shotgun paper. But I've never capped either, that would take forever.

you gain no "character level" exp from reading, so yes...if a skill can be raised fairly easily by crafting, then thats the way to go.

the only skills where you should read every schematic/book you can are...leather armor, iron/scrap armor, and any schematics/books that raise "science".

damn, that what i feared for , because you know, like, tool smithing, i could grind stone axes all night BUT, i was reading all the books regarding, so, sincei dont level up with them, i could easilly grind it by crafting aces and actually progressing my level.
so i f'd it up... now i will have to level up another stuff so i can level up, nice. lol.

its 200.
and you didnt really eff up your character.
i did the same thing at first and read everything. i got quite a few things to 100 but still managed level 120 which allowed me to take all the critical perks and then some.

well , 120 till 200 is really a lot of points.

5 points per lvl times 80 levels you fkd up = 400 points you lost to put on something else xD, still , thats a lot of points anyway , but , cool , tyvm ! i might reset later ( create a new random gem world ) or w/e.

once again , tyvm

I'm not sure I'm understanding the last poster correctly, but reading the books usually only boosts the related skill by one point. And you don't cap out at 120, it's just relatively easy to reach level 120 through crafting. At around 120, chances are you've maxed your armor smithing/weapon smithing/gunsmithing/leatherworking/science/tools crafting, basically all of the 'easy' skills. After that you can still get xp from using different weapons to kill zombies and potentially scavenging if you haven't maxed it out to 100. It's just the rate of leveling slows to a trickle because it's so much harder to gain more experience. I also tend to switch to doing quests around 120th since I have the extra time where I'm not crafting and most of those give another two skill points. But it's more to kill time, since I usually have 40-60 unspent skill points by then. And because I've developed a taste for sawed off shotguns and nailguns.

i meant i got many of my skills to 100 through reading schematics but i still managed to get to character level 120 fairly easily even without the exp from grinding the skills up.
and armorsmithing and leatherworking arent "easy" skills to max. i level those strictly with schematics.

I don't see the problem with reading every book yoiu find. I do. Sure, you might cap up before 200, but it's not like levels add anything important, like more health, or higher wellness. You just get skillpoints that you spend on skills/perks. You'll still get enough points to max out every perk and usefull skill. If you do it by level 120 instead of 200, what's the diff?

The diff is that in the original game code, the percentage chance of the level of the loot that you find is tied to your level. Plus scavenging and quality joe perks. So the faster you level, the earlier in game you're likely to find 500+ level loot. Plus important finds, like calipers/tool&die set, etc. And yes, while I have never done it, I realize from reading forum posts that you can probably just go in and edit the code. I'm just old school, I like to actually play my game and 'win' by its rules. So the quicker you can access some of the skills/perks (quicker crafting/sexual tyrannosaurus/miner 69er/concrete making/steel making/leather crafting/quality joe/bullet making skills) the easier it is to not only survive but dominate the landscape. Cars are the main exception to that, I'm not sure if loot tied to gathering using a wrench is totally random, but you can get 500+ level car items at a fairly low level, and pretty crappy items at a very high level. Which are important in crafting your minibike, which pretty much opens up the entire map for exploration.

120 max , - 80 Max level = - 400 points loss that you could put into something else, but its cool, i will try and create a new Random gen world ( ohhh gosh) and start all over, ( no problem to me since i love this game ) and actually only read once every book so i can know the recipe and thats it, the rest i will only scrap

You need to subtract the skills that you gain from reading books from that 400 difference. You are getting those skills earlier than otherwise which has it advantages. For instance higher early pistol skill might make the difference between living in dying.

Yes the min maxers need to avoid reading books. However I find the game gets too easy after about day 56 anyways and I normally start a new game. Thus I am not trying for level 200. If you are planning to play for 200 or 300 days then don't read books.

The only thing I do is delay reading a book until I have just leveled that skill. I hate grinding 95% of a skill level and then reading a book for the 5%. It is much better to me to finish the 5% myself and then read the book and in effect get two skill increases.

you dont get weapons skills from reading schematics, only weaponsmithing.
