Slugs or Shells?
I'm able to make both shotgun shells and slugs, but I'm not sure which is better. Slugs seem to take more material than the shells, so I wanna make sure it's worth it before I make a whole buch of them.

make one and check the shotgun stats after its equiped. They are much better overall but it depends on the quality of your gun if its worth making them or not. Compare it to stone or iron bolts etc

Does having different ammo equipped to a gun change the damage values on the weapon itself?? I've never noticed that.

it's not a bad idea to have some on hand for quicker takedowns of the tougher zombies (ferals, cops, Z-bears), but as for use against common Z's, it's not really resource/cost efficient, unless you have the ability to manufacture a large stockpile.

Thanks for your input, Torriador. I may make some of both and switch out like you suggest.

It's a question how you want to use your gun.

The slug is more for killing big enemies, because very powerful.
If you only want the shotgun and no other gun, than use both. Standard should be shells, because they are better against dogs (easier to hit until running).

My favorite:
If you are using additionally a sniper rifle, than only shells. This is very comfortable, because you can use brass and paper for ammunition = you will have more of them.

Also possible is additional a .44

Just thought I'd toss in my two cents in that I thought I read from the slugs description that you can only use slugs with the long barrel shotguns, not the sawed off. I tend to carry around the sawed off shotgun myself for the Huntin' Rabbits quest. Also, a little off topic, I'm pretty anti-pistol these days, so I just melt down most of the 9 mm ammo I find to recover the brass to make fresh casings to be used for my sniper rifle/magnum ammo.

Thank you all for your input.

And I did test out the entity damage thing with the different ammo. It -does- directly effect the damage values on the gun. With shells, I had like a 40 or so entity damage, and like 120 for the slugs.

Yes

To simplify things, TFP have decided to put the damage stats on the weapon rather than the ammunition so changing the ammo from one type to another will change the displayed amount of damage dealt.

Basically, slugs are better for the more tanky enemies. Ferals, fatties and police officers. I imagine they'll probably also be better for Bandits when that rolls around.

Pro tip: The brass light fixtures (walls and ceilings) on buildings yield scrap brass when you use a pick axe on them. If the exterior lights are brass then the entire building has brass fixtures. You will probably never run out of brass again.

hehe i used to hit all the brass lights too :)

btw the slugs also have more range if i remember correctly, but up close it always seemed easier to hit zombies with the shells

Thanks a lot for your help with this topic. Cookies for all!

And that, my friend, is very good to know!! Cause I've been having a hell of a time finding brass to make ammo... Why shells are so much cheaper to make. lol. Anyway you could post a screenshot to show me what these fixtures look like??

The shotgun is unique in that it actually has no damage. All its damage is delivered by the ammo itself - which scales depending on the quality of the gun.

Shotgun Shells can deliver, without factoring in any potential perk boosts or bonus, 3.6-9 entity damage.

Slugs deal 100-150 entity damage.

Also factor in that a shotgun blast hits more than once. So that "9" max damage with a shell isn't as low as it sounds when factoring in that, to the best of my knowledge.

Still the damage difference between shells and slugs is significant. They're more than x16 as powerful as a normal shell.
