I find the easiest is to get to a river bank and look for small stretch that is yellowish & cracked. Bit different to the normal bank. Dig.
You can also dig it near surface inland (pleasant countryside biome) but not as obvious.

Dig by any water source usually rivers (most common source), lakes and puddles work too. Some times you will get clay randomly from normal dirt too. You can occassionally find a vein of clay away from water too but that seems very random.
dig under the sand next to the rivers
Also the sides of a cliff if you can find one, it will be pretty apparent in the color difference. I have also found some showing through the grass on a hillside.

I found ALOT (pure accident) when i started a mine in the wasteland...first layer destroyed stone...and then..wohoo surprize..clay, clay and even more clay..a big bubble of clay..and below normal stone.
:-)
Desert biome is full of clay. The only two biomes I struggle finding clay in is wood lands (green and winter). Plus the city (not waste but full buildings). I found clay was one the harder ones to find, until I learned to tell what it looks like.
thing is every guide says to dig ... to make a shovel and pickaxe u need the mold, which u need clay for ... so how do you dig ?? (its why im even looking for clay in the first place)
reposting cause i failed to hit the subscribe button
If you're trying to make clay molds, you can make clay from corn. Otherwise yup digging, I found plenty of patches around the corn farm.
You can also dig with the stone axe, which does not require any sort of mold to make.
As others have said stone axe can let you harvest clay, wood, etc easily. Once you find a cliff and look at it you will easily be able to tell what clay looks like.
I can normally get lumps of clay inside 5 minutes of starting a new game. riverbanks are the best. dig with a stone axe like others have said and pop it in the center of the crafting window. each clay makes like 6 or 8 lumps.
Corn Flour and Water also make Clay, You can turn a Corn Cob into Corn Flour and make Clay by adding water, some areas are very hard to find real clay, but it is usually near a river " orange/Brown dirt " or up to 4 blocks down digging in some areas.
i managed to start hammering with my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ stone axe and solved the problem and somewhat progressed like 10000% faster , thanks guys but the lack of info was shocking :p (i searched everyywhereeeee)
