depending on the lvl of treasure hunting skill determings the size of the area roughly where the chest is buried. when the chest icon flashes red just means you are warm to the right place it can be a fairly bigish area if no treasure hunting skill taken.

Theres a radius of effect when you're in range, and the chest can be anywhere from 2-4 layers below ground. You should see your compass flashing red to signify you're in the area.

Used the compass and wood frames to mark your dig site ( the flashing will stop if you move too far), then get diggin!

copied my comment from a previous post;

A relatively easy way to locate treasure with no perks (85% success)

when you reach the treasure zone, back out until the chest stops flashing.

Circle around the zone, looking at the treasure indicator, until it directly lines up N, S, E, or W on your compass.

Move into the treasure zone and dig a 2-3 deep trench directly in that compas direction, until you exit the treasure zone.

Circle around the treasure zone again until you line up the treasure chest on your compass exactly 90 deg to the trench you dug (W E S or N)

Enter the treasure zone and dig another 2-3 deep trench directly in that compass direction

You should now have a cross dug in the ground, and then there (usually) are 2 options;
a) the treasure chest will be within 5-6 blocks of where the trenches intersect.
b) the treasure chest is usually no more than 2-3 blocks out from the sides of the trenches (usually at 2-3 deep)

This will save you a lot of time trying to uncover a large area, or digging blindly.

There are some different situations, where if the indicator is in the water, it's just sitting on the lake bottom, and when the indicator is under (or 1/2 under) a POI, it's possible to be on the roof of the building.

It could also be just not there... Found a treasure map, followed it, my friend, another guy, and myself started to dig out the area. The other guy had an auger. We dug 5-6 blocks down. Nothing. At all. Just sand and dirt... I was pretty sad that I didn't find a chest.

Dont forget to look up!

my last map was in the backyard of a Pass n Gas, i dug a huge hole even going under the building. then after going thru 2 full 300+ shovels, i happen to look up and it was on the underside of the awning in the air.

Treasure chests are rarely deeper than 3 or 4 blocks unless it is a hillside. I have gotten chests that were deeper than 6 blocks when there was a steep hillside.

Maybe one of your buddies looted the chest and decided not to share. Also the chest can be fairly easily destroyed by an auger. If the auger guy wasn't paying attention,,,,,,

I have never destroyed a chest. If the flashing red icon is still there than the chest is still there.

if the chest is destroyed, the treasure icon disappears, and the quest gets tagged as failed.
(not sure if the quest fails if someone else loots the chest)

it does.. only when the treasure seeker opens and loots it does it complete in sucess.

I have also had one chest that wasn't there. open area no trees and buildings and we dug to bedrock... nothing.. we even expanded it a good 5 blocks out from the treasure area. but that has only happened once in maybe 100 treasure boxes over different gameplays.

Ok, so here's my little bit of advice. Just dig 3 blocks down while in the flashing chest area, and fill in the block above you. You'll end up in a hole shaped with a downwards cone pointingdown, and upwards cone pointing up, your head will kinda half-clip through the upper dirt and you'll be able to look through the ground and just turning around will allow you to easily locate the chest, and even sometimes allow you to loot it through the ground which removes the need for more digging.

I line the treasure chest up with n/s/w/e on the map, back out until it stops flashing then back in and when it flashes place a wood frame, go to the other side and do this again/repeat till you have n/s/w/e marked then head for the center and dig. After a couple times you will only need to place one frame from one direction and be able to count blocks till center. Dig down like 3 times then just circle while digging, usually not to bad to find, i did have one that was like 2 blocks from the edge which was a pain in the ass but only happened once. Ive seen them as shallow as 2 deep myself.

I think with like 1-2 skills in the treasure skill the center is usualy 6 blocks to center. Idk like i said once you find out the first time you will know until you upgrade the skill.
