They've done a lot of good since then but TFP are ruining or completely removing some of the core systems and game mechanics that we used to have and that's when I played the game the most - and enjoyed it the most. It's just that simple, it was the most fun for me and my friends at that point in time. Everything since A16.X has been a few steps in the right direction (mostly art/asset related) and just as many in the wrong direction (mostly core game systems and game mechanics).
Nothing is ever "ruined" when it can be adjusted to your liking. This game is made to be modded. There is no reason to pine away for lost features.
Modding my preferences back in, and the associated learning, has been just as much fun as playing the game over the years. It is a big part of the joy for me.
So my favorite is A20, and then whatever comes next, but I will always have a special place for A17, when things got weird and I started fixing some of my own problems instead of crying while waiting for the planets to perfectly align.
But that covers only one half of my feelings regarding this game.
I really liked the times when survival was more harsh, zeds where more of a rhreat, maps were less cookie-cutter and the tower-defense part wasn't so overpowered.
So I would go with A10/A11 and it's rather intimitating random hordes.
I once cowered in fear on a scavenging run, while I witnessed a horde tearing town a whole neighborhood on its way through the village. (literally - whole houses did come down in a matter of minutes)
If they would have noticed me then, I wouldn't have had a chance.
Haven't had such a moment since A13 dropped.
And I miss those moments really.
Have to go with this.....^.....
A16.x is/was the best. Since then it's been like they can't figure out what they want the core game mechanics to be......constantly re-working them. With that, some things are improvements while others just seem to dumb things down. The only real problem I found in A16.x was late game became too easy and a little repetitive / boring but, as long as you enjoy the building aspect, it could still be fun. I feel like they could of just added more content, improved AI for zombies, done their graphics improvements and, released it as finished with A16. That's just my op ofc.
This version as it is the first i play.
But nostalgically, alpha 6-13ish.
You're lucky, you don't have better versions to compare it to. You can go back and play old versions in the beta tab, though. Probably shouldn't. If you do you'll likely get cranky about the current state of the game like I am.
Cheers. I knew I wasn't the only one, thanks for saying something.
Why does everyone always only remember what they loved and forget all the other problems of that version?
If you want to cheese this game in various ways, the decision is up to you. You can somehow cheese the game in almost all alpha versions. But after alpha 19 i can't even get 30 fps so playing previous alphas and getting fun is better.
You prabably never played A16 I suppose (or don't remember).
The truth is that the A16 AI was the easiest one to "cheat"/"cheese" because it was mostly harmless and would often bug out.
A17 was the first version where, to compensate for that, they first implemented the structural engeneering AI that everybody also hated.
So basically, we transitioned from an AI that couldn't find you reliably and got stuck, to an AI that would always find you and would even know the buildings inside out so that it would always be able to path to you through ladders/doors/hatches.
That's why the current Ai version IMO is much better, because faatal put a lot of work in it to make it more varied and less "perfect" in finding you (minus BM horde).
I'm not saying the current AI is the best, but it's gone leaps and bounds from what we had in A16 in my opinion.
