simplest base is either a 5 x 5 cube or a corridor base off that 5 x 5 cube. Just build the walls and a combat window and reinforce the blocks.

Forgot to mention either line the outer walls of the base with spikes or campfires. Light the campfires during horde nights and any zeds that try to attack your base from behind or on the side will eventually burn to death. During normal days the zeds try to avoid the obvious spikes and for some reason they hate campfires.

Wooden bars are your friend. You can shoot through them, and you can place them flat to make catwalks to shoot down through.

Hay bales! Make a HUGE base out of hay bales and you'll be as safe as a safe in a bank! :HappyMask:

Stairs. Not actual stair blocks, but stairs made out of whole blocks. The way zombies handle jumping provides MASSIVE crowd control AND gives you a perfect shooting corridor. Just be watchful for situations where your "stairs" might take damage.

Build a triangle, not a square. This is a real world strategy I decided to try out and it works wonders for horde night.
- Takes fewer resources than a square, as you've taken out a full wall.
- The game lets you use more than just cubes, so it can still look aesthetically pleasing.
- Less area to cover, this includes turret coverage, and if you'll always either be looking straight at the action, or be adjacent to it.

Another thing if you like auto-turrets, there are SMG and shotgun turrets that take 9mm ammo and shotgun shells, as well as a 'Robotic Turret' which gets special ammo that's basically just a pure iron conversion. While it's not strictly 'required' Intelligence makes the turrets way easier to make and more plausible to set up.

I do something similar in that I use rows of full blocks with barbed wire on top of and in front of it, the slowdown from the jumping and the wires, and maybe even an electric fence post wire is just an absolute heavenly setup. Slows them to where you don't even have to try to aim.

Which type of base are you wanting to build/defend? Home base, which is where you craft, cook, and keep all your loot or your Horde Night base, which is where you stand your ground while zeds attack every horde night? Each base can be built and defense added in multiple ways.

If you want an all in one base.... I'm going to say don't do it. Home base defense can be simple since you won't need to defend against a horde night. Horde base defense can range from simple to downright complicated. It depends on what you're willing do.
