Any ideas what would make my situation different from the masses?
We're playing a single game, around day 75, on a rand gen map with all default settings.
If that's all in fine shape, then it sounds like the problem could be your friend's Steam settings or Privacy settings.
They'll likely need to set their profile privacy to Friends/public and their game's to Friends/public (not private) and there have also been some regular Steam options that I noticed locking out seemed to mess with my ability to host like you've mentioned.
I've also sometimes needed to set the game itself to Public instead of FriendsOnly...then add a simple password and message it to whoever will be playing. I think this was my temporary workaround when the Steam settings weren't letting me be otherwise visible (I think it was weirdly the Streaming settings or something strange).
Sorry, I haven't been able to figure this out at all despite messing around with it for a few years, lol.
- I've confirmed in-game filtering isn't the issue
- I've confirmed in both of our Steam profiles, everything is set to Friends or Public.
- You mention "regular Steam options", but I'm unclear what to check here.
I acknowledge possible workarounds of a Public game with password and Joining via various other Steam features (which is what we're using right now).
However (message to devs): It is super frustrating that the in-game UI Just Doesn't Work. I shouldn't need third-party apps to assist performing the most basic and critical of functionality of starting to play the game.
Everything was working Just Fine and neither of us changed anything in Steam or 7 Days, until one day it wasn't. I presume the symptom started immediately after whatever 7Days update added the red warning text (since we'd never seen that before), though initially I assumed it was an ephemeral issue so didn't take time to document this.
This appears to be a flat out bug, or at least such something so hopelessly beyond user control to diagnose and fix that it should be messaged appropriately in the game. I'm a rather tech savvy user and have spent over an hour trying to diagnose this annoyance.
I think it was something goofy like SteamOverlay or Broadcasting being turned back on which seemed to fix visibility for me at some point, but I can't say for certain.
It could've even just been a total coincidence for all I know.
First, backup your save and map files if you intend on resuming a previous game session. Then;
Run 7d2d launcher.exe, switch to 'tools' tab, click 'Clean' and select all the options to clean. Switch back to main tab, disable EAC (if you don't need it) and Anaylitics then, select 'Run and save settings.' Next, at game's main menu--options, optimize your video settings. See this thread for pointers on that;

Close out game. Copy your save and map files back to appropriate user folders. Re-launch game and continue your game.
Optionally, create a new map then exit the game so RAM is flushed. Then, launch and start a new game using your new RWG map.
