Iron Pickaxe
I have read tons of posts but they seem to be from like 2-3 years ago and the system has changed since then it looks like. I made my forge, got my iron and clay from the forge. Went to my workbench. Its grayed out. Same at Forge and same in the inventory but I have the items needed. It says I dont know the recipe. So I went to the wiki which btw is really outdated, says I need a toolsmithing perk. I looked in my perks. I dont see such thing. What am I missing??

Many of the more advanced items are locked behind the "Intellect" branch of skills. While you unlock the ability to make forged iron with the first perk of hammer and forge, you need the second perk point to make iron tools. Later, you'll need the 3rd point to make steel, and the 4th point to actually make tools from it.

You need to get level 2 in Hammer and Forge. Hope that helps

And to get that second level in Hammer and forge, you need around 5 intellect and to be level 20.

You can also loot tools from various places, especially from boxes labeled as "working stiff" crates, and also as rewards for quests or for sale at the traders.

The new system (a17) is based on looting and normally you will find tons of tools (found a steel axe, steel shovel, nailgun, chainsaw, many wrenches, hammers, guns, goggles, helmets... in the first 10 days). You will also find workbenches in every city and in many pois with a garage. Chemistry station is at the trader. You can be relaxed, just go out looting and you‘ll be fine.

I think you need to have hammer and forge rank 2 which is level 20 (I might be wrong, if your still confused, you can hover your mouse over the lock on the required perk to show what you need)
