Mechanical Parts?
With this new update, one of the things I am struggling with the most is finding mechanical parts early game. I am trying to make a workbench, but I still only have an axe meaning destroying things is not an option. I have literally scoured an entire town and only found 6. What is the best way to find them? I am clearly doing something wrong if something so essential is so difficult to find.

There are certain things you can smack with a stone axe and still get mechanical parts; Though which things I can't think of off the top of my head. Sometimes you've just got crap luck though.

Make sure you're searching every cupboard you can in residential places- If you can get a wrench you can get tons of mechanical parts.

Loot absolutely everything.
It's ridiculous the things you will find in trash cans or rubbish piles.

If you've managed to get six and haven't got a wrench from elsewhere, I'd be very tempted to put a point in salvage operations and craft one. Six mechanical parts is exactly what you need for a level 2 wrench. Once you have a wrench you'll have more mechanical parts than you know what to do with.

Oh you'll need a wrench to craft the workbench too, so being able to make them is quite useful.

As others have mentioned, the wrench is the best way to get them. Or, the traders will often sell them, they're not too expensive.

Look in sinks for wrenches. Trailer parks, hotels, diners and so on usually have lots of sinks that you can go through quickly and easily.

Once you have a wrench, just use it on anything that would logically give parts. cars, washers/dryers, shopping carts, that sort of thing. Also if you find & scrap a motor, you get something like 30 parts for it.

If it takes getting/buying 6 mech parts and a point in Salvage Ops for a Wrench asap, do it. If you're playing solo one day you'll be able to buy the fergettin' elixir and you can respec and clean up "wasted" perks.

Until I get find a Wrench, I just find them in loot.
They made Trash MUCH more worthwhile to scavenge. I suggest looking through all the Trash loot containers.

A wrench is your number 1 priority for getting mechanical parts. Sadly you also need mechanical parts to craft it, so you need rng to bless you with mechanical parts or a wrench in the loot, but the moment you can get a wrench start scrapping cars and machinery with it and you'll have plenty.

I am currently having this same issue. im on day 13, and am level 23, all ive found so far is 2 mech parts, but yet i have a level 6 shovel, and a level 6 pipe baton, and a level 3 pipe machine gun. so my rng cant be all bad.

I would like to know what i can smack with a stone axe to get some parts at a much higher RNG rate.
Also, do claw hammers work the same as a stone axe in terms of salvage rng in what you can get? As this is also a repair tool of better quality.

I would like to see a perk in forging, to be able to smelt mechanical parts, so that if you get all the way to forged iron, you are clearly ready for being able to get your 1st amounts of these to make a wrench and work bench.

Sometimes the RNG is simply against you. Just keep searching those sink cupboards for a wrench, and check the traders after every restock for parts or a wench.

I honestly never though to use the claw hammer to harvest, but I would bet it's worse than the stone axe in that regard.

You need to search in stores like Savage Country and Pass 'n Gas stations, there are plenty of toolboxes and stuff there where you could loot mechanical parts sometimes.

SCRAP OFFICE CHAIRS / WRENCH STUFF LIKE CARS / FRIDGES AIR VENTS PUT POINTS IN SALVAGE OP FOR MORE PARTS ETC...
BGratz Oct 16, 2022 @ 12:47pm
Harvesting is the very most important thing. Means a wrench and a raised skill in it are a top priority (together with a high barter skill)
There is no better way to make money and get the equipment you need in start and midgame.

Ehrm... maybe you missed the part where he said he doesn't have a wrench.

Scrap office chairs (not destroy, not harvest, but scrap them). Guaranteed mechanical part in each one. And they are fairly common in regular old house POI's. That should get you enough to craft a wrench and then you are done worrying about mechanical parts.

EDIT: This post is wrong. Scrapping an office chair gives only leather. I'm putting on my dunce cap for the rest of the day.🤢

Whoah, that is a great tip! I didn't know that... That means the only barrier to being able to wrench things is our willingness to spend the skill points.
