Build a wood door, install it then upgrade it as far as you can. Then build a metal door using 10 forged iron then upgrade the wood door to full metal then upgrade the metal door two more times using 20 more forged iron.
Upgrade all your walls to stone.
Like Cesar recommended, I spent my first few days focused on repairing a house I looted, dropping a claim block (to prevent sleeper respawns) and then putting wooden spikes in front of the doors. My personal entrance into the house is through a window. Do note however, wooden spikes just slow them down a little and apply some initial damage. It's by no means a reliable solution to kill anything by itself unless you have very large number of them (probably 5 per zombie).
I went the Strength route for my first several skill points as I remember enjoying using the Sledgehammer when I previously played, but it does take some discipline when fighting so you don't find yourself out of stamina and surrounded by zombies. It's certainly managable to take on 10 zombies in melee (not all in melee range of course!) with 100 stamina early on (especially with the strength route), provided it's not night time and you're able to backpedal away from them and/or juke them around obstacles.
As far as what to do at night, I usually organized my inventory and re-familiarized myself with what I can currently craft while I wait on morning to come. About Day 4 is when I started digging a basement at night and I've been slowly expanding it every night since. If I'm feeling adventurous I also run the Forge/Campfire at night.
Once you get better gear and you're more familiar with the threats and how to deal with them, night is nothing but more day, just darker. You can do missions, loot, travel from town to town and such at night just as well as during the day.
Edit - Also if you're playing solo, consider setting your days to 60 minutes and the night/day settings to 18/6 (these are default.) You can certainly kill 10 zombies with 100 stamina, the key is stamina management and choosing how and where you fight them. Don't get cornered, keep moving, don't get hit and you can fight dozens on day 1 with a just a wooden club.
In the begging it's all about managing your stamina, especially on hardest difficulties. Nobody asks you to stand your ground or walk backward aiming at a zombie while desperately waiting for stamina to regen so you can finally hit him again. That will get you killed. Cut corners, jump fences, cars, close and repair doors, use high ground, knock them down, make them bleed, set them on fire, use sneak attacks. So many options. Most importantly don't be overweight. You won’t be able to outrun anything. Don't use full junk armor set. It will barely protect you and make you slower and noisier.
There are also some rare shoes that give you stamina regen + sprint speed and the College Jacket that gives you 10% speed
Don't mess with boars, wolves, werewolves and be on the lookout for zombie dogs. You can't outrun them and they are tough to take on for low levels. The best way to get away is by jumping fences or try to get onto something that is 2 blocks high or use a ladder cause the animals can't use them.
Also, there is no point in making an entire house your base. It's a waste of time. You just need a single room (preferably a garage) with a door, where you can put all your containers and workstations. You want everything to be accessible fast. No need for digging or building the bloodmoon is comming and you need to find enough ammo and good weapons to deal with the first horde. Make a separate base for bloodmoon close to your base so that your stuff won't be destroyed.
I feel my response was helpful.
* Cooking
* Sorting stuff
* Crafting
(on the POI roof i took as startbase)
Second night is comparable
And then it depends on the game.
Cook and organize
Raid POIs
Mine a deep tunnel to find Iron/Lead/Coal/Shale, or just gather Clay
Find out which things I want to craft, and which items I need for them at base
Every once in a while:
Try to spawn a Screamer so I can get some free exp if I don't wanna raid POIs (given I have a good horde base and proper armament)
Go to the next Trader/Quest that's far away if I need to either buy/sell stuff or want to move biomes
