1 - generate new maps using the actual tools/previewer first, vs. via "generate new map" while under New Game. It'll get stored and will be pickable from the map list like the PreGen maps are.
2 - after the map is done creating, exit the game first and restart (this clears the ram some) to new game with that map (pick it from the list).
When I do that, starting a new game then loads my new map very quickly. Well...at least relatively. A minute or so, more or less.
Yeah, it crashes/freezes on me now and then for 10k too, but usually at the very end or during the actual visual map preview generation in the side window, which seems to create a large spike of system RAM usage on top of the huge ram it uses up to begin with. For me it's been about 50/50 odds.
10700KF, 3070, 32GB RAM.
= No real improvement in truth, they just moved some of the map generation stuff to the "session" load instead of doing it in the map generator.
Save Game took normal ~20-30 secs to load, so no really noticeable change there either.
Haven't tried it with a bigger map (8K or 10K) but I expect the ratio and outcome would be pretty much the same.
When you say you used the Advanced Map Generator, was it this one/these menu options?

No, I was using the Advanced Map Generator that you can select from the map selection screen when starting a new game. (and no, it wasn't my first A20 game, as I did a very quick and dirty look see at Navezgane before starting on a custom gen map.
--I got my PC to generate 10k maps seemingly with never crashing. I had to:
--start the game on the 1440 monitor instead of on the 4k TV
--increased my page file because I usually have it set to a small static number. I made it a higher static number. I didn't see pagefile use go up much but who knows maybe it helped.
--by the time 10k is done rendering *and* I've zoomed the preview pic fully, I was at 31GB used out of 32. Most of the process it's around 18-20GB but the last minute+preview pic creation really spikes up memory usage.
...I need to get myself another 32 RAM now.
Some of us also just like to wander/explore and build many small bases all over the place, vs. never going very far away from a giant city or whatever.
I put everything to "many" with max mountains, plains, hills, and random (all to the right)
Total time: 13 minutes 13 seconds
Systems specs:
CPU: Intel Core i9
GPU: GeForce 1080 Ti
RAM: 64 GB
RAID 0 HDD hard drives
I monitored a few things during the generation and found:
My GPU was barely being utilized. This seems to play a negligible part in generation (as I suspected). About 15-20% of my CPU power was being utilized and about 45-55% of my RAM.
The map frankly came out looking pretty interesting and something I would play (if it weren't so freakin' huge).
Edit:
Out of curiosity I ran the same settings for a 6144 map.
Total time: 4 minutes 6 seconds
