7 Days to Die
Average time for new random generation at max world size (10k)?
Just wondering what times other people have been getting while I wait lol
-high end pcs 5 minutes or less
-medium end 10 minutes roughly (I am on 1080ti / amd ryzen 5)
-low end expect even more

If you click the game sometimes it will pop up not responding - but don't worry just let it load

I generated a 6k map that took about 5.5 minutes to finish, but then it took another 7 minutes in the first play for that actual map to load (because it was generating POI's etc.) So it "looks" like they just "moved" some of the map generation to a different loading screen.
That sorta happened to me the first time I tried, too. The generation seems to suck up tons of system RAM by the end (I have 32GB and it likes to take up 20-25 or more) and doesn't release it right away, so then when you start the game immediately it can seem to have problems. So it's best to:

1 - generate new maps using the actual tools/previewer first, vs. via "generate new map" while under New Game. It'll get stored and will be pickable from the map list like the PreGen maps are.
2 - after the map is done creating, exit the game first and restart (this clears the ram some) to new game with that map (pick it from the list).

When I do that, starting a new game then loads my new map very quickly. Well...at least relatively. A minute or so, more or less.

I was hoping to answer this, but I'm currently 3 for 3 on crashes during the world gen. It seems I'm unable to generate a 10k world without crashing.
Yeah, it crashes/freezes on me now and then for 10k too, but usually at the very end or during the actual visual map preview generation in the side window, which seems to create a large spike of system RAM usage on top of the huge ram it uses up to begin with. For me it's been about 50/50 odds.

Took me around 8 and a half minutes to render a 10k world.
10700KF, 3070, 32GB RAM.
AMD R5 3600, 16GB Ram @3200Mhz, GTX1070 (GPU is actually not used at all while generating) Default 8K map took 6mins 10sec.
11 minutes to make a 10k map. My pc is I7770, 32gb, RTX 2060.
15 min for a 6k map on my potato PC i5-7300HQ , 8gb, GTX1050 but yeah I love your game at the risk of my own PC to melt <3
I used the Advanced Map Generator for my 6K map and all up it took ~ 13-15mins to finally get to the player spawn on first load.

= No real improvement in truth, they just moved some of the map generation stuff to the "session" load instead of doing it in the map generator.

Save Game took normal ~20-30 secs to load, so no really noticeable change there either.

Haven't tried it with a bigger map (8K or 10K) but I expect the ratio and outcome would be pretty much the same.

That's odd. It takes one minute to load a new game (not a working/save game) with a brand newly made map (player spawned/in-world) as long as I restart game first. All it does is the loading game data/intializing world, no generation of anything text etc. Maybe it's a rig-specs factor, dunno.

When you say you used the Advanced Map Generator, was it this one/these menu options?

No, I was using the Advanced Map Generator that you can select from the map selection screen when starting a new game. (and no, it wasn't my first A20 game, as I did a very quick and dirty look see at Navezgane before starting on a custom gen map.
11 mins for a custom 10k county map. All options to "many". Left plains/hills at 6. Mountains at 3. Random also at 3. "older" 4yr computer. Nvidia GeForce 8GB 1070, 40GB of memory, i7. New machine gets here mid-january and can't wait to see what it can do with this.

On the slight chance it might be helpful to anyone:
--I got my PC to generate 10k maps seemingly with never crashing. I had to:

--start the game on the 1440 monitor instead of on the 4k TV
--increased my page file because I usually have it set to a small static number. I made it a higher static number. I didn't see pagefile use go up much but who knows maybe it helped.
--by the time 10k is done rendering *and* I've zoomed the preview pic fully, I was at 31GB used out of 32. Most of the process it's around 18-20GB but the last minute+preview pic creation really spikes up memory usage.

...I need to get myself another 32 RAM now. :steammocking:

I play with loot respawn set to Off.
Some of us also just like to wander/explore and build many small bases all over the place, vs. never going very far away from a giant city or whatever.
I ran the test with the seed "gentest" on 10240.
I put everything to "many" with max mountains, plains, hills, and random (all to the right)
Total time: 13 minutes 13 seconds

Systems specs:
CPU: Intel Core i9
GPU: GeForce 1080 Ti
RAM: 64 GB
RAID 0 HDD hard drives

I monitored a few things during the generation and found:
My GPU was barely being utilized. This seems to play a negligible part in generation (as I suspected). About 15-20% of my CPU power was being utilized and about 45-55% of my RAM.

The map frankly came out looking pretty interesting and something I would play (if it weren't so freakin' huge).

Edit:
Out of curiosity I ran the same settings for a 6144 map.
Total time: 4 minutes 6 seconds

Hint for laptop users: You can speed up map generation significantly by enabling the vsync, as vsync limits your FPS in the main menu, allowing better use of available power.
