Alpha 20 Farming / Plant seeds
I just got to the point where my plants have matured, but all i got was:

-2 plants on every plant
-and on one corn plant i got a corn seed also

The plants were completely destroyed and did not revert back to their seedling stage.

Is this intended? That would mean Farming is only viable at Farming lvl 3 (gaining 6 plants ( so one plant and one seed basically)).

Yes, it is intended per the A20 Experimental Release Notes[7daystodie.com]
Player planted crops now give 2 fruit per harvest with a 50% chance of a seed

Frankly it's nice that they are trying to make food a scarce commodity (early in the game anyway). In the A19 with only level 1 (2 products by plants) and day 5 you are as developed as Monsanto!
tazman1 Dec 7, 2021 @ 9:16am
yeah if you speced into it

The big issue was if you were not going that particular tree it was almost impossible to get food stable enough to actually do much of anything other then hunt and pray

As it is now, planting seeds give you a net loss, and you're just better off buying produce and not even trying to grow it. If you turn any of your plants into new seeds, you're actually losing out -immensely-. The balance here would be to reduce the amount of resource necessary to make a seed to 1, so you can actually make a profit from a seed. Either that, or make it 2 to make a seed, that way the one point in farming can get you a slow profit.

I wouldn't mind seeing an additional growing stage added where you have the current 2/50% at the current growth level, and an additional level above that keeps the 2 return but 100% (or increased chance) for the seed. This way you can make the choice where you harvest early for the chance for the seed or hold off and get a better chance of getting your seed back.

It does make it harder.
Perk level 0
2 fruit/veg + 50% chance of seed
Perk Level 1
4 fruit/veg + 50% chance of seed
Perk Level 3
6 fruit/veg + 50% chance of seed

So with a start of 50 fruit that convert to 10 seeds.:
WORST CASE:
Perk Level 0
20 Fruit + 0 seeds (worth 0fruit) = Loss 30 Fruit
Perk Level 1
40 Fruit + 0 seeds (worth 0fruit) = Loss 10 Fruit
Perk Level 3
60 Fruit + 0 seeds (worth 0fruit) = Profit 10Fruit

AVERAGE CASE:
Perk Level 0
20 Fruit + 5 seeds (worth 25 fruit) = Loss 5 Fruit
Perk Level 1
40 Fruit + 5 seeds (worth 25 fruit) = Profit 15 Fruit
Perk Level 3
60 Fruit + 5 seeds (worth 25 fruit) = Profit 35 Fruit

BEST CASE:
Perk Level 0
20 Fruit + 10 seeds (worth 50 fruit) = Profit 20 Fruit
Perk Level 1
40 Fruit + 10 seeds (worth 50 fruit) = Profit 40 Fruit
Perk Level 3
60 Fruit + 10 seeds (worth 50 fruit) = Profit 60 Fruit

As can be seen, on Average it will take at least one level of Living Off The Land to have a reasonable chance of being profitable farming but even then losses are possible. It will take all 3 levels to guarantee profit.

I mean you can still plant your seeds.

You just should not make seeds from fruits, if you do not skill into farming.

i agree with dragonmaster on this one..

add an extra stage to growth with decreased fruit yield but increased seed chance
(the plant has gone past its prime and has gone to seed)

I'm not at all a fan of this change... It seems like a big step backwards, it brings back the tedium of constant re-planting while effectively removing farming as an option for non-farmers. There were better ways to make farming increasingly viable at higher skill levels.

Imo it should have been one or more of the following:
50% chance of a seed with increasing chance based on skill
Reduced seed cost
Faster grow time based on skill
More ways of obtaining seeds.

Basically I think the game should reward the skill, not punish the lack of it. This effectively makes farming useless without putting points in it, may as well say you can't use a bow without putting points in archery, or can't cook without points in master chef.

Agreed and not only that it makes farming an end game source all together. There are too many skills you need for stamina, cooking, first aid and all kinds of other stuff before you start putting them in farming.

Man I really not a fan of the new farming setup with this update, I maxed out the farming perk and spent three in game days looking for veg to make into seeds,

once my crop was ready I collected them like normal and had only got 4 corn seeds and 3 potato seeds back , was forced to turn most of my crop back into seeds to get my plants growing again as I thought this was a bug,

the new system gave me

30 corn plants = 180 corn turned back into 26 seeds with 60 corn left
24 potato plants = 144 potato's turned back into 28 seeds with 42 potato left
2 blue berry plants = 12 berry's turned back into 2 seeds, 2 left with 2 berry left
1 pumpkin plant = 6 pumpkins, turned back into 1 seed, with 1 pumpkin left

the old system would have gave me

30 corn plants = 90 corn
24 potato plants = 72 potato's
2 blue berry plants = 6 berry's
1 pumpkin plant = 3 pumpkin's

I ended up bored with the new farming system as I found it to be a massive chore to do and was wasting to much time on it and was not having fun with it at all,

I understand farming was over powered in A19 but you guys need to try a different system,

my idea would be to make plants fully grown every 5 in game days, when harvested plant turns back into a seedling and gives 3 crops per plant to a player with level 3 farming perk if player has no points on farming perk they get 1 crop back. if rank two then 2 crops back, by increasing the growth time for plants it would force players to do hunting or scavenging for food while waiting, you could even make it harder by making the farm block work next to a water source only forcing players to build by lakes or to head out and collect water for the farm.

Welcome to what happens when everyone complains 'Food is too easy', 'Farming is overpowered', and 'We liked the old farming system!' ad nauseum. Change happens. It may be tweaked down the line- But this change is pretty much entirely the result of community feedback, at least from where I'm sitting.

Seed-wise and replanting wise, This is much like the old farming system- Except you do have a chance to get a free seed back now, where you didn't before.
I remember looting houses and actually finding food in early game...
