farming blue berries.
so I notice with 2 points in living off the land I harvest 4 blue berries per plant. this makes farming them inpossible even with 2/3s of the farming perk tree unlocked. is there a way to get more out of the harvest or do you just have to have all three lvls to be able to farm anything ?

your forgetting that you have a 50% chance to get the seed back. So while starting a farm can be a lot harder since you have to hope that you get the 50% chance for the seed back on your crops, once you have enough plants down it should be easy

And with second point you have 50% chance for one more fruit.
So on average with 2 points in faring you harvest 7 fruits. While seed costs 5.
So you are profiting even with 1 point in farming.

Small field is a problem, one unlucky harvest and you can have a loss.

With 4 fruit back and a 50% chance of a seed, that means you average a net gain of 1.5 fruit per plant.

Not much more to add what hasn´t been mentioned yet other than don´t make too small farms so even if rng isn´t your side some time you still make profit on average.

the best option i've found while waiting to get level 3 living off the land, hunt for eggs and meat to make bacon and eggs for food. if you go for plant based food, harvest them from farms, especially ones that are tied to a possible quest since they would reset the crops after you harvest them.

Yes, ideally you need all 3 points and you're making profit. Every harvest you have enough to craft seeds for the replant even if the 50% didn't proc. And you keep the excess.

Another factor is to "reinvest the profits". Do not use any till you feel you will have enough and use each harvest to make more seeds. I reached Level 3 a few days ago and now rolling in food.

Side question: I found mushrooms above ground. Were they always there? Really hard to see. Do we still "plant" them on walls or are they now in a plot like everything else?

Since A20, I higly recommand to not plant anything until you reach lvl 3 in Living of the land.

For mushroom, you can plant them anywhere, but make sure to plant them in a closed room, they need complete dark to have the best growing speed.

I found the about 5 plants for each seed is a good starting point. After that, you move up to 15 corn, 10 potato, 15 mushrooms, 10 Blueberries, and whatever you want after that. I do 10 Hops, 10 Yucca and 5 of everything else on the roof of the house my party built. I literally have 3 stacks of corn, a stack of blueberries, 2 stacks of potatoes, and my mushrooms (and meat) are the two that are still lagging behind. May plant more shrooms in our basement just to boost profits. (That said, we have almost a full writeable chest full of steak and potato dinners, so...)

you need the 3rd point into it. They wanted it to be a requirement for guaranteed profit
Dragonmaster Jan 25, 2022 @ 5:28am
On avg you see a profit return with just a single point (which doesn't require any main stat points). You would have to run a 20% seed return or worse to "lose profit". Points above stand where you should build a little excess to account for RNG before you start using them for food if your gonna farm.

Yeah framing is broken, if you don't have like 10 plots per plant because the % chance. Once you have around 10, the odds and yield make it so you at least can break even. If you edit blocks.xml you can increase the yield, and say make it take longer to grow to not break the balannce. (that is what they should have done....)

Well they went the route of double the yield and half the seed. A19 gave 1 base yield, A20 gives 2 base yield to keep the balance.
Result gave that not investing in farming means you just plant what you find and investing in farming is better then it was in A19 (due to double yield getting tripled)

I increased the XP for the extra time spent punching plants. They should also consider yield differences in biome. Maybe even consider not allowing some items to grow in some biomes. really a farm in the desert. What are we arizona? Do you really think farming works in arizona without all the infrastructure in place to move water there. Sorry Arizona would be one of the first places everone dies. In my world it rains everyday in the desert???

I really hate this new BS of it raining everyday in the desert. Whole reason I prefer to live there is because it is not as depressing as other biomes or WAS. Devs have to stop listening to complaints from the vocal few. A16 was fine and most changes since are downhill. Seems this happens with all Alpha games.
