Base Ideas: I wanna be safe
I've gotten pretty far into my most recent game, Having a great time. but I've been looking for/thinking about the best place to hide within and live at. I never feel safe, even when I'm "Safe" I'm never safe, the screamer is always coming and zombies are always a threat. I need to know what base ideas exist that makes you guys feel safe? is their any areas you move to or locations you live in that makes you feel protected or safe? please let me know. I'd seriously love to hear what bases make you happy

Any building I can take the stairs out of feels safe, except on bloodmoon. Screamers don't come if you don't generate heat.

I've lived in barns, rooftops, bob's boars, the roof of crack a book, the roof of savage county, etc

Don't have your forges inside your base area, don't use torches/candles, don't use guns. don't mine/auger/chain saw around your base, don't use explosives, don't run gas generator, don't use stationary turrets/traps, etc

The apocalypse is meant to be embraced. Why live if you can't have fun?
This base had apartments, party decks, theaters, a bowling alley, crops, a drive-in, and a horde fighter. ;)

build a base made out of safes
I make a concrete wall around my compound. blade traps lining the complete outside of said wall. that handles most of em. then i live underground in that compound. i live very compact. only thing above ground is vehicle garage and farm. after day 30 to 50 i usually have enough steel made to make the wall steel. that helps. I typically am only at base for short periods anyways so my base rarely gets touched.
I get the discussions about bases being boring if they are safe. but what I'm mainly looking for is help around building a base in a certain location, mainly the Mansion in the desert. any new-fab bases are cool too but they need to be worth abanding everything I have at my current home.

so a few facts that might help.

I'm currently living inside of the desert biome at the mansion. what I'm looking for is a base where I can go inside and not worry about being attacked because the base is constructed to protect me. I might still have to fight but I'm basically saying "How would I do I get to the point where I'm not spooked all the time"

I never base where I fight hordes. Never had more than one forge, WB, CS, CM, and crafted storage boxes. I do however start a lot of new games. Maybe that`s why I have so many hours and so much time?

IMHO, when playing solo, you want a base that lets the horde run up a bunch of stairs to a room that has exits to outside where they fall. Then you live on the floor above with lots of metal bars to shoot through. You can't just hide at the later game stage, you need to kill em all. I put in an electric fence to hold them, a couple of shotgun turrets, tin land mines and spikes. Make sure there's no wall they can bust through to get upstairs because they will.

Make your character tough so you can take hits.
Ain't nothing an M60 with a couple thousand rounds of AP can't fix.
would a Helicopter work if I flew it up at say, the bloodmoon? like I turn off everything in my base and just fly away?

No, you'll eventually get vultures that will destroy your Gyrocopter and you fall out of the sky to die when you hit the ground (if vultures don't already kill you on way down, lol.) There's really no such thing as a 'Safe' base. I mean, you can make your defenses so strong that they usually never get into your base but, that's about it. Cuz no matter how strong of materials used to build your base, they can eventually destroy them given they have long enough to do it. Thus the need for killing them before they can demolish your base. Killing fields all around your base using all the weapons / tools at your disposal is your best way to stay safe in your base.

Easy... build a crafting/home base. Restrict yourself to 1 furnace, 1/2 camp fires, 1 chem station, 1 mixer and out of all of those only use 2-3 at the same time. This keeps your heat level down to easier to manage levels.

Avoid using torches and candles. Pumpkin lights work for that kind of lighting without impacting the heat level from what I've seen so far. Use them with care though in case that changes or just go with lanterns for lighting or a solar light bulb setup in later game play. Avoid gas generators since they are a bit noisy and consume fuel.

Do not make your crafting base your "horde" base. Avoid fights at the crafting base at all costs. If you do choose to engage use quiet weapons such as melee or silenced weapons. Make good use of wood spikes since those are easily renewable and can provide an audio warning of breaking and crying zombies if a random wander/wandering horde shows up.

If you are going for a large farm, place that somewhere other then the crafting base. Should something happen at the base the farm and food it provides will remain safe at it's alternate location like say down the road a bit outside of spawn range for zombies. Same goes with tree farms and any mining operations you do. The idea is to spread out heat generation as much as possible here so your main base stays safe as well as your resource zones.

Never stay in the 'safe base' during hordes. Pick somewhere else far and away do your horde nights. Other side of town, other side of map, etc are all places to do that. Again you are spreading out your heat generation from the battle and avoiding damage to your safe base.

In short to keep a base safe the best thing is to not be at the base. Spread your heat generation out far and wide and you won't have as much problems with the main safe base to rest at.
My base is a 5 block high solid foundation with a room on top, interior dimensions of 5x10.

You enter the base by going up some stairs and walking across a long pole at the end of which is 3 layers of bars leading into the base. Theres a door to the side of the bars that you reach by laying down some frame shapes which can be picked up afterwards. The roof is covered in spikes

On horde night the zombies come running up the stairs and attack the bars. Because the path to the bars is a thin pole only one zombie can hit the bars at a time and the corpses and loot bags fall down to the ground keeping it clear. Vultures on the roof fly into the spikes and die.

A few zombies will stand around at the bottom and hit the foundation but not many, and its 5x10 solid concrete so they will have a hard time doing anything to it. On top of that the foundation has a layer of concrete railings stuck to it so they have to break through two concrete blocks just to get one square inside it.

9/10 of the zombies will just run up the ramp to the bars and get completely mowed down by me. Because the pole forces them to go in single file only one can even hit the bars at a time and the heads are nice lined up for shotgun headshots. I'm on day 28 and I've yet to see them even get one of the bars below half hp and there are 3 layers of them.

Eventually I made the pole leading to the bars twist in an S shape with walls inbetween the curves to stop cops from being able to see me and puke at me until they are within 3 blocks of me so I can quickly take them down at close range. I've yet to see the exploding zombies so dont know how well it will hold up against them
