I think I've heard some folks mentioning they're running faster on Vulcan before crashing, but when I've tried it recently it didn't seem to give a noticeable boost....though I couldn't try it long without the game crashing pretty fast.
Turn Particles% to 30% or lower in the graphics from the Main Menu. Adjusting it while paused in-game doesn't seem to work properly for some reason. This helps some occasional bad FPS drops that may happen every couple minutes outdoors, AND it might help the performance on horde-nights with molotovs.
ShadowDistance is a bit bugged right now, so it can tank performance at certain times of day (mostly in the Forest and Wasteland). I'm lucky and usually simply dropping it to MEDIUM is enough to work-around, but I've heard other folks mention needing to drop ShadowDistance all the way down to NEAR or OFF to avoid these bad FPS drops.
It IS one of the "heaviest" graphic options, so turning it OFF gets some pretty big gains, but it's also one of the most important for appearance and atmosphere...so I'm glad the devs are looking into it right now, hopefully they'll be able to sort out the Shadow hiccups.
If you're playing SinglePlayer (or you're the Host for MultiPlayer) you can also smooth performance a little by pressing F1 and typing
gfx dtpix 199
then press enter, then type
trees 0
then prss enter, then press F1 or ESC to close the F1 menu.
This simplifies distant terrain/mountains until you get closer, and makes some of the very farthest away trees invisible until you get a little closer....mostly helps outdoor FPS stay smoother.
These F1 settings usually reset themselves back to default whenever you quit/close the game though...so you'll usually need to retype them whenever you start playing.
This is the last I heard from faatal (one of the lead devs) about Vulkan:
Me too..
