What is the best way to mine
I'm kinda bad at this game and need help with mining, thanks for any info. It seems inefficient to look around for the ore on the surface and mine it all so I was wondering if there was a better way

Finding an overworld ore stone means you find a vein of thousand and thousands of ores. Every ore stone on the ground will have a vein under it. So just dig down really...

there are also ore deposits under ground with no node on the surface.

but ya early game find the node on the surface and dig down

rock busters mining increase, coffee if you've read the books to increase harvest and etc. points into the mining yield increase is good too. mod your tools as much as possible because it'll scale the block damage alot, if you find an augur use that. mod it as much as possible. if youre gamestage 90+ ride around in towns, you can look in the cars outside t5 factory quests locations and even use the quests to reset the cars. ive found too many augurs when I didnt need them anymore that way. I think air drops give them because you find chainsaws pretty often in them. other than that maybe garage/workshops or anywhere with a working stiff crate or stuff like that to loot. later on you can use rockbusters and easily make close to 10k rocks and still have minutes left on your bonus using an augur. and if I remember rocks are 500 health and ore is lower and breaks faster.

not rlly mining itself but its rlly important to have a productive location where youre staying and basing so you can do stuff like mine at night while stuff is crafting at a bench of cooking, or your cement is mixing or the forge is going. later on you'll be using several forges and several cement mixers so they'll all be running while dig up more resources. then you can leave them going for an hour or two while you leave your base and you have permanent upkeep.

if you dont feel safe digging yourself a hole in the middle of nowhere and being stuck in it with no stamina dig under already built POI's, if you invest no resources you dont have to worry about them being broken into and if you're dug under them you're still safe regardless.

also frankly mining sucks early so, the closer you are to a trader or vending machine where you can buy something like a yucca juice smoothie thatll give you a big stamina regeneration bonus for 10 minutes for only around 100 coins the better, because you can amass or stack multiple items youre going to use and wait till youve got nothing else to do.

dig a tunnel to a certain layer of safety and have fun.

OK great thanks this helps a lot. I'm not super super new as I've been playing for like 70 hours over the past couple months. But in the new save my friends and I made I'm doing all the mining stuff now that we know we need to.

Is it an ok idea to have a mine in my base? Currently I live in a bunker in a well, so I just dug a hole straight to the bottom of the earth then started looking for ores there with my Auger. Just want to be sure this is fine to do. Thanks again for all the help

This is perfectly fine! Using an auger at the bottom of the world is probably the safest way to mine. Just choose a direction and start digging and, eventually, you'll be certain to run into just about every type of needed ore, well, unless you live in the desert which means you'd have to go other places to get coal, or you're not the desert and need to find Oil Shale. Either way, I've been known to dig a tunnel from my home in the forest biome all the way to the desert biome... easy, quiet *other than the obnoxious auger noise* and relaxing... enjoy!

Alright sick great to hear, thanks for the help! And yeah I honestly enjoy doing all the mining stuff, it should be boring but I find it fun
Its ok to use the auger at the top of the world.... just be prepared to deal with the screamers...

Although recently.... as my horde base is already a screamer generator (see below)
my mining has just been a large open-pit mining hole... and when a screamer drops in... just shoot her. :steamhappy:

The steel pickaxe is the best way to go imo, keep lots of coffee on you and have your friends bring you all the mining books. The auger is guaranteed screamer action and it gets annoying not to mention the sound is awful and will drive you insane.

You'll also want sexy tyrannosaurus skilled up as well as mother load and miner69'er. Rock Busters (candy) are nice as well.

here's some more info.

It can be fine, but you DO need to keep in mind that if you drill even one of the blocks beneath a support pillar, that pillar can no longer support the rest of the base and will instead start making the rest of the base support IT. If your base has support walls instead of lone support pillars, you should be fine.

Still, it's probably best to drill a small tunnel out away from your base before you really start looking, so that you don't wind up with huge holes eating away at base stability.

I haven't played for years, but wondering if my old mining technique would still work. I always mined from my base straight to bedrock, using ladders, and then i made shafts 2x2 in various directions, finding veins. Always steel pickaxe ofc, better than auger with skills. And i used minibike to move in shafts :D . Only dangers was cave ins, thanks to mining from bottom to above. I used i think iron frames as supports and scaffolding. Great bonus was that you could mine nonstop, day and night, no danger from zombies. Would that still work in current version? Thinking about playing again.

Yeah the Augur does have a very annoying ass sound.

Can confirm this way of doing things still works. Not every area of resources has one of those markers on the surface.
I just use wooden pillars (one of the advanced options found in wood frames, which are one item that never leave my person) to hold up the roof if I'm clearing out a larger area.
It seems that, for now, every resource you can find down there will be paired up with one other resource so if you find something you don't want it pays to dig around/though it to see what its neighbour is.

As to zombies, for most of the week you'll be fine as while the act of digging will attract the odd group and/or screamer if you are digging under your own base then any defenses you have will take care of them most of the time and even if they do dig they don't tend to be very fast.
Don't be down there on hoard night though. Their running speed isn't the only thing that gets a boost.

Find the block of ore on the surface and mine it straight down. Once you're about six blocks below ground level you can branch sideways and put in ceilings so it doesn't collapse.

VERY EFFICIENT.
