Long time logging into a server

Is it a known thing for logging into an alpha 19 server to take forever? I've been waiting for 15 minutes now. My game is installed on an ssd and the server is installed on an hdd on a different machine with 64gb of ram.

Distance to the server will make a difference in time to download, as will the size of the map. Then you've got other variables with network connections and security software.

well thats the thing, I host the server in my own home. Makes things worse, I can join other peoples servers instantly. I waited an hour and still wasn't able to join. I've got port forwarded, i know how to do that because of hosting ark servers. It sits on the EAC/tip screen after running through the creating characters/building environments thing clears out. I can log into my ark servers with no issues.
