Yes, conditionally. You need sunlight for everything except Mushrooms.

The first tutorial shows Farm Plots. The second tutorial (A16) goes into more detail on what types of blocks allow in sunlight. The third tutorial goes into GREAT detail on light allowing blocks.

To further clarify, You need Sunlight. Meaning you'll need a window to the sky above your crops- It can have glass in the hole to, yknow, stop zombies from falling down, but it must otherwise have a clear line through to the sky. And the light spreads a few blocks in any given direction from the place it lands.

One of my preferred subterranean farms is to dig out a 5x5 vertical shaft as deep as you like, and put 5x5 Farm Plots (but leave the center empty, this will have the sun shaft above it, illuminating every level of the farm plots) after every 3 or 4 blocks. Corn needs 3 empty squares above the farm plot, but everything else (including your character) just needs 2. Keeping the size of each floor to 5x5 means you can plant 24 crops per floor, and you don't need to install flooring under the farm plots, since their horizontal support is enough to keep themselves and their neighbour attached to the wall.

I just use wood frames to climb up and down the center shaft (wood frames let light shine through), getting off at each floor to harvest. You could probably make a ladder in one of the walls if you prefer.

What do you use as a cap? Do you even use one? OK, after edit, I guess the frames are your cap.

Shurenai, if you dug a tunnel at an angle, like say through a mountain, does that count?

For the sun shaft? I prefer Iron Bars over bullet proof glass, but only because I've noticed Solar Generators didn't work under the glass (I guess sunny-beams are projectiles?).

Vertical shaft only, the sun is above you. The spread in the light is about 7 blocks I think, but it's been ages since I tested.

Must be direct vertical access. Angular sunlight isn't calculated. It's just like minecraft. STraight line directly up to sky.

Interesting to note. Plants grow = Sun, Solar generator doesn't work = No sun. Either way, they should match.
