Custom bunkers not for defence
I'm fan of the bunkers and I want to live in one. I already know bunkers won't save me from horde nights so I want to make another base for defence.

I'm only wondering if random walkers nd diggers aren't a pain in the butt. How deep do I have to dig (in blocks) so they won't hear me? also I don't want to dig too deep becouse long entrances kill immersion for me and I don't want to fight chinese zombies.

Depends if you are putting forges/chem labs in this bunker. If you are then the screamers will find you no matter how far you dig down. The screamers have a heat detection mechanic that triggers them. Heat is generated from things like forges, chem labs torches and campfires.

Also fairly recently i think they added screamers triggering off Mining the metal ores (Iron/Lead) so if you are mining in the bunker then you could get some unsavoury visitors. I think you are safe if you are mining stone, coal, or Nitrate though.

This isn't recent. It's been a thing as long as the heatmap has existed. The only recent change was around a16 when torches and candles were coded to generate heat.

Generally speaking, their detection range is about 30-35 meters. So if you are more than 35 meters from the surface, screamers will not detect you when they come hunting. They will still come because the heatmap is infinitely vertical, and when the heatmap hits 100 a screamer scout is spawned to investigate. I usually leave some kind of defensive measure above ground to deal with them.

If you're going to have a lot of things running, it's good to spread them out a bit. Heat is generated inside the chunk area. So if you have two forges that are in separate chunks, their heat will not be combined. It would be like only having one. A chunk is 16x16 blocks.

Screamers won't be a problem until they actually see you right?
So heat should not be a problem unless they 'hear' you and start digging.
Just play it save and go deep.

I'm not that much familiar with the heat system but I get it now.
Good thing the heat is not higher if you are closer to the center of the planet.

Thanks

People tend to put a lot of forges in one place and have them running 24/7. I honestly only ever keep 1 forge and usually when I run it I head out while it runs. When I get back it's usually done and I shut it off if it still is running. I built a single sized trailer park with garden and have had zero issues with screamers as well as keeping my resources well stocked. I'm on single player but the technique works. That being said I still run it when I'm at the base and I don't draw much if any screamers. I get them more when I do extended mining really in the desert.

Lol, I can't tell if you're joking or what, but just in case... heat is not intended like that! :agis:

Also just to clear something up so we can all move towards using the right term, The proper term is "Activity Map"; Not "Heat Map".

And Heat Map before was not in relation to Temperature, But to the frequency of events, like a keyboard heatmap that shows which keys you hit most often vs those you hit least often.

The Activity Map is a sum of events that make sound/light/smells/etc that the zombies can pick up on, not a rise in temperature in the area.

It's listed on the Wiki as Heatmap, and I believe the term is also used on the official forums. But yes, ACTIVITY MAP is a much better accurate description.

Yeah I was joking but still good thing you clarified that.

I know last I played (in A19, tho not the very very latest A19) if you build upward high enough they don't even appear at the moment (probably not intended?). I'd assume this is true for *down* as well, but I'm not sure if one can dig as far down as you can build upwards. Edit: I feel like bedrock is more shallow than in days of old.

I don't remember the number of blocks upward - it was something like 30 or 40 tho. I tested it once. Did that, stuck in several forges in a single room running 24/7, watched the heat % rise to 100% ... at least when I was standing up there looking downwards, no screamers spawned at the ground at all. Zero. Zip.

If the heatmap strength in a chunk hits 100 a screamer will be spawned. If it doesn't find you, it will either wander away, or eventually despawn. Saying NO screamer spawned at all is doubtful.

I just tried it again.

30 blocks up from the ground level.
10 forges going.
Broke up some steel blocks to make noise for good measure/to speed it up.

Heat chunk went to 100% and reset - no screamer/s. I can see downwards to the ground (open walled) and a random wandering zombie is down there jiving about, but ... no screamers.

This is with a starting/very low gamestage tho, since it's a test. But I did play a save in the past with a base like that for quite some time and never showed up either.
