but i played a lot of solo sessions too, mostly trying mods and new settings. when playing solo i stay nomad most of the time, with only small dwellings, mostly scavenging and just a bit of crafting, exploring the whole map.
i guess playing with randoms is difficult, like in every other mulitplayer game. you allways have bad eggs in the basket. never tried that. and i probably never will...
I prefer freinds co-op maybe looking into a bigger server with PvP in teh future
anyways...
Neutral multiplayer, where people just kinda play and do their own thing seems like it might be ok. The minor pros of having a world that can change without your input, having time advance without you being on so you can get to those high numbered days, and having the option, maybe, of interaction seems outweighed heavily by the chances of people just being jerks....breaking in and stealing stuff or outright trolling and demolishing other people's work.
Friendly/cooperative multiplayer is a LOT of fun, and really opens up your options in the game to play harder settings than you might play solo, or specialize in strange, hyper-specific, or joke levelling builds just for fun, because multiple people (even one friend) can help shore up other's weaknesses. Someone invested in strength for mining, someone invested in perception for salvaging, someone invested in intelligence for crafting, someone invested in endurance for setting up the farms. Plus the general fun of playing games cooperatively with friends can't be overstated.
Solo play in this game still has plenty to do, and even without being able to specialize as...deeply...as you could in co-op, there are plenty of viable and fun builds. The cons are that yes, without someone else to play with, the game will likely get stale fastER (faster than with other people, though how long the game will feel fresh depends on individual preferences). Also, solo, the emptiness of the world feels a bit more profound, stockpiling loot starts to feel a bit empty....how many stacks of sham chowder do you really need? how many backup augurs are worth keeping? Why are you holding onto that level 6 sniper rifle when you have NO points in intelligence? On the plus side though, you get to play EXACTLY how you want. Game settings? whatever you want. Mods? whatever you want! Tweak the XML files to your preferences? WHATEVER YOU WANT! Also....can pause the game in single player.
I joined a server and spawned in the wasteland... I started doing the usual stuff to survive and had to build a ragtag hideout to avoid wandering hordes and spawns.
I was starting to get the hang of it when suddenly I see a guy (probably a kid) coming at my place and constantly bunny hopping around... he started spamming concrete blocks over my place and was typing gibberish in the chat (like always laughing and such).
That was it.
I always played solo since then.
But, I love the game for single player most of all. It just has a much spookier atmosphere to it being alone. Still very enjoyable with the different settings one can change to make things easier or more difficult as you wish.
I absolutely did not turn the loot up to 200% Never!
