But sometimes I get so tired of traders deciding where I build my base that sometimes I use nitrogen to make maps without them. Then I either build near/in a town/city or by a place that looks pretty.
I don't really have a favorite biome or if I do, its maybe desert, but burned forest is for sure the biome I least want to live in.
I pretty much Never make a base in a POI.
But any POI that has at least 2 story is usable. Just destroy the stairs and use a running jump ladder to get to the second story so the zombies can't get to you.
Its not big, so its easy to wood spike around the base on the ground.
Psy-cho-path-y... if trader locations really bug you, admin spawn one in your base instead after 2 weeks. You can pretend that you befriended the trader and they choose to move in with you :) And delete the old trader from the game.
This is a very easy setup since its already got a concrete foundation to begin with. Can easily go till demos show up honestly. The biggest problem with the design is actually the door. Sometimes the turret just slams them into the door instead of knocking them off the steps. Future iterations would probably remove the door all together. Even the hatch is debatable to have there.

But late game, a symmetrical fort with your base built high above it (to reduce heat map attracting screamers) works quite well. Well, until bandits with mortars or sniper rifles come
5 pillars, 2 floors, the second floor covered on the top, the ground of the first floor made of bars so I can shoot enemies from there, everything made of cobblestone. Iron bars to avoid enemies from coming to me, wooden bars to shoot through and kill enemies.
I can build it very fast in creative mode and show you with SS so you can understand better how it works, just give me some time, I will edit this comment, I'm going to do right now.
Edit:
I didn't put too much thought on that one, but you got the idea, this is a pretty early game stage, it's cheap, you can do without forge because it doesn't need forged iron that much.
You can replace all iron bars that are on the floor and walls for wooden ones, but let iron bars in the stairs, because enemies will come from there, this is how I abuse enemies AI. This is only 16 iron bars, back to back, in two rows, I don't know if you can see, but I there are 16 iron bans on those stairs.
Everything is cobblestone, easy to craft, in the early game. The floor is a square 2x2 of bars that you can on, and kill enemies through it, and walls are the same, but not 2x2, of course. Ceiling covering so you don't receive attack from Vultures, but you don't need a ceiling right away, the first Blood Moon (maybe second one) is safe against them.
You can go to that catwalk and kill enemies hitting the iron bars while repairing the iron bais, the distance is close enough to reach with your tool, and far enough to enemies to jump to it, and that's it. Pretty cheap early game stage base, that lasts for 3 or 4 Blood Moons.

Now wait on the catwalk around the water tank and watch the AI pathfinding lead them all the way through the water works and up to the roof of the main building (which should be the closest to your position). They'll try to jump over, but the distance is way too big and they'll just fall down and repeat the process all over again.
Spider zombies may occasionally make that jump though, so a few bars as bareer and protection will make sure that they won't land on the catwalk.
On a side note, the water towers tank is super easy to access and usually doesn't even have zombies, so you can skip the cleaning part.
Cause we ain't having Bloodmoon at my house.
Day 14 and on: A flat grassy area. I like it to be close to my house in the city for easy access for materials and supplies. Within 1000 or so km. I think our current one is like 400 away. I want plenty of open space to expand or change the build as we see what does and doesnt work.
