I can't believe that I am the only one that thinks 5 meters is inappropriate.
Seems to me that you were expecting this to be an echo chamber. That you were hoping everyone would agree with you and stand around glad handing and patting each other on the back for thinking the same thing and being so right.
The "sawed off barrel" modification still increases the max range to 30 meters but effective range is reduced by 40% not to mention a wider spread. This isn't a problem since the max range stretches out the damage reduction over 30 meters. At about 15 meters, with all pellets hitting, you should do 50% damage.
The "fore grip" mod should help reduce spread (aim and hip).
The "laser sight" reduces spread for hip fire only.
The "gun barrel extender" just adds 20% more max and effective range, not much but you can't have more than one barrel attachment ... :(
Shot gun slug ammo adds a bit of range too, but I believe the sawed off barrel trumps ammo range. You have to test the range with wooden blocks at 30 meters with and without the sawed off barrel. You'll see the range increase.
Make a Mod using those new Russian Slugs then you can set it too 100m & not feel bad in game lol
If you don't actually want to be sharing thoughts and ideas about the topic, this may be the wrong place to bring it up
You're reading the effective range, max range is 10 meters (12 for slug ammo, 4 for breaching).
I agree with the other player's btw ... The shotgun is the most powerful weapon in the game for short range usage (sawed off long range usage with worse spread). The reason why it can be the most powerful weapon is generally the "rad remover" mod. All you have to do is hit the zombie with one pellet and a group of radiated within 30 meters has the potential of nerfing all the zombies and then followed up with a molly and a couple of stone arrows ... :P
If I had the ability to name my shotgun, I'd call it ... ARC LIGHT.
"Arc Light" was the nick name for a B-52 bombing strike in Vietnam.
Boom ... Bada-Boom ... Boom-Boom ..... You're done.
First, I completely 100% agree shotguns are almost always treated rather silly in video games. All games, not just this one. The range and spread are wildly overblown. A cylinder bore (no choke) will put 75% of the shot on a man sized target at 20m. In games, the shot has spread out too much to hit anything after 5m. Quite silly.
However, this is balanced out by the fact that games also make the power of a shotgun larger than life. There's something mythical about shotguns that make non-gunowners think they ultra-hyper-bazookas or something. (they aren't) I blame American movies. And this game is no exception. In this game, for two gun powder the shotgun does as much damage as 3 shots (9 gunpowder) of 7.62 ammo. (Which is also quite silly). So you have choice. Insane OP gunpowder efficiency at short range. Or decent headshot power at long range. As it balances out, I don't really see a problem with that in a game as a way of offering a choice of weapon functional variety.
Extending the shotgun to also be long range (without also cutting the damage by a factor of 3) basically makes all other guns underpowered and obsolete in comparison. If you want range, use a rifle.
When they made slugs armor piercing, it became very obvious that they're not going for realism at all. I think the shotguns are fine for a game which definitely isn't going for realism. If you want a more realistic shotgun experience, play Ground Branch or SCUM or something else. You could just edit the config files and have shotguns work as you'd like them to.
Now, all shotguns should vary stats (sawed-off)
If you hate the range, quit using a sawed off/buckshot and upgrade that azz to a regular pump shotgun that can take choke mods.
PS:Slugs have a 60 blok range.
-Cheers yall
