I loot mine from treasure chests, gun drops, gun chests, munitions boxes, air drops, random loot, and buy from trader...I rarely make my own.

trader and treasure chests being the majority of ammo that I get.

First off you should be collecting brass 24/7 whereever you find it unless you have to loot quickly before nightfall. By the time you find a gun, the schematic for it, and have a workbench ready; you should have a nice little pile of a couple hundred peices of brass, dont also forget to gather brass from sinks if you need to. As for the rest, all you need to do is mine the boulders for a day which gives you lead, nitrate and coal easily. Then get the perk for what ammo you need and your set to mass produce bullets.

Chopping down burned trees in the wastelands will yield lots of coal too.

scavenge cars for brass radiators to get brass. in the burned biome you find nitrate nodes and coal from trees

Brass is at a premium in this game. Save your bullets for the badass Zombies. The rest get an arrow in the head

Truth. Ammo is a precious commodity, if you don't just cheat it up. Use it only for special occasions.

Brass is the real bottleneck in bullet production. Shotgun shells take paper though...

Craft it. It's piss easy to craft at the right level. The regular boulders drop nitrate, coal, lead. Then you just hit everything you can find that drops brass as you play and you will have so much ammo you won't get through a tenth of it before you get bored.

All of the advice above, plus you have to make every shot count. Hosing them down with an AK or sub machine gun costs a lot more than patient head shots.

Aim to design a base that will kill most of the zombies. Passive defenses are a big factor. You should only have to shoot the big ones, radiated, or spiders.

Miner 69 perks and you destroy every "big rock", they yield coal, nitrate, lead, iron and stone.
(those thing https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/545258048655482185/6041FB91CCE10AD8664596E8C91952DD0966D65D/ )

I made 500 bullet that way yesterday (also got 1500 raw iron)

Edit: That screenshot is from A9, looks so outdated lol

You just have to forge that brass and lead and make it. I always keep a slot in my pack with brass. No matter what goodies I may have to leave behind, I always keep brass.

Just a note on the War of The Walkers MOD- Mining copper and zinc, then melt them together in the chemistry station produces brass. Mining actually pays off in that mod. Lead seems far rarer in that mod though. Mostly found in those big boulders mentioned earlier in these comments.

One thing no one's mentioned is you can't make a chemistry station (which you really need for gunpowder) until level 60 and that's if you have all the pre requisite perks. Best thing to do is find a pill store that has a chemistry station in the back and set up shop nearby to make all your gunpowder.

Most of my ammunition comes from looting buildings and zombies. I do get some nitrate and coal from braking up rocks, but not nearly enough to keep me supplied. I use both a bow and crossbow to kill off most hordes and save my sniper rifle for hunting deer or the occasional lumberjack.

Treasure chests are the best, i always pick like 300 - 400 ammo for AK and others

Keeping your eyes open for caves is a good way to get that nitrate. Especially once I get the mini bike and get a lot of map explored simply looking for the little black spots on the map is a good way to find them.
