Charcoal / Coal
I feel like we should be able to make it in the forge by using wood... I'm not sure why this hasn't already been put in, honestly.

Logically we should but in the game there is no need for it, you can get all the coal you want from the burnt forest just chop down trees or embers, get coal and wood.

Although this is true, sadly the rate of coal per tree is low compared to the several thousand Nitrate I have. I would have to chop down essentially an entire biome to get enough coal to use all of my Nitrate for gunpowder x_x

Lol I'll trade you, I've got so much coal it's not funny but barely 1k in nitrate.
Try mining up north,I found a lot of coal mining the snow biome but no nitrate and the desert came up bust as well.
Where did you find all your nitrate?

I've found a lot of it all over the forest biome. Pretty much all I do when I set up shop is scout the nearby underground veins. Drop a flag, dig 1 gravel to check what it is, place marker. Drop flag at the next location, dig 1 gravel to check, place marker, etc, etc.

I've done this all over the snow and burnt biomes and have yet to find any coal veins, sadly :\

Other than the ones up on the ground anyway.

You know, it's interesting. Now that I think about it, given the recipe we're using to produce gunpowder, our ammunition would be black powder based, which would create interesting issues for most modern firearms (Anything automatic is likely to jam a lot, just as an immediate and obvious issue).

It'd be kind of cool if ammo you bought from the traders was modern surplus stuff, and your own self-crafted ammo was black powder, causing malfunctions, and creating huge clouds of smoke after any kind of sustained firing :D

That would be pretty awesome. It would also add a nice new level of difficulty for early/mid game, or even late if you have only 1-2 traders to deal with.

Charcoal and coal are 2 completely different things.

You cannot make coal by burning wood, and you cannot use charcoal for all the stuff in the game that we currently use coal for.
KellyR 22 aug, 2017 @ 5:13
Charcoal and coal are two different things, but they have very similar properties, and gunpowder was made with charcoal for centuries before it was every made with coal.
You can also "chop" down any old buildings that are "burnt". I noticed I got some coal from going threw the walls of the small burnt out buildings. I can not remember the amount thought.

I've never had a problem with Coal, its all RNG anyways, if you find none on the surface, go deeper.

I think after burning for so long, campfires/forges/chemstations should produce coal. Maybe at a rate of 1 per 5 minutes. It might be hard to implement too. They would have to add getting your jars back when you cook things using water as well though. :buzzed:

I agree 100%

I get that glass is the easiest thing in the world to get a ridiculous amount of. But it just makes absolutely no sense to throw away a glass jar after using the water inside of it when you're in a zombie apocalypse...
