He's asking about alpha 16 where there is now just one generic plain "storage box", you need to paint the old labels on (or just use wooden signs which was also previously an option)
They aren't even called "crates" in the crafting menu anymore

look up recipes for animal hides
You can build wooden signs and label them without any books
You only need the books if you want to paint them, quite frankly I end up using signs anyway because there's not enough labels to really customize much variety
