They do run away if you get too close but they are there.
You could verify your game files and / or start over and see how that goes.
With the grass render distance dropped to minimum I can see everything long before it sees me.
Game files are verified fine and I am not starting over again at level 45.
Note that this is in no way a new issues, I searched and found 6 pages of threads on this on going bug. And they said to start a new thread on the problem, so I did.
Did you actually read my post?
There is chickens in this game they spawn in the desert, and as i have experienced they ONLY spawn in the desert. They're very small and difficult to see in the grass, as they are shorter than the grass itself, but they do exist.
What map/version are you running?
What settings do you have set for wildlife spawns ?
There are chickens still in the game, just played last night and killed them for the nail gun quest so it would imply you’ve done something to prevent the spawns.
<entitygroup name="FriendlyAnimalsDesert">
<entity name="invisibleAnimal" prob="6"/>
<entity name="animalRabbit"/>
<entity name="animalChicken"/>
<entity name="animalBoar" prob="0.4"/>
</entitygroup>
<biome name="desert">
<spawn maxcount="1" respawndelay="3" time="Any" entitygroup="ZombiesAll" />
<spawn maxcount="1" respawndelay="4" time="Night" entitygroup="ZombiesNight" />
<spawn maxcount="1" respawndelay="14" time="Any" entitygroup="EnemyAnimalsDesert" spawnDeadChance="0" />
<spawn maxcount="1" respawndelay="21" time="Any" entitygroup="FriendlyAnimalsDesert" spawnDeadChance="0" />
</biome>
This is inside the XML files for entityclasses and for entityspawns.
As you can see here, chickens do exist inside the list.
Problem is that they are more rare than boars are, and you will likely not see them, like with rabbits.
Well you have a few options....
Cancel the quest.
Start over ( most probs your best bet )
Or start over and make your self level 45.
It sounds like your just not seeing them or a faulty game file.
So like somebody has said up the animal spawn rate and start over.
Getting to level 45 does take long anyways.
So you didn't read where I said "With the grass render distance dropped to minimum I can see everything long before it sees me". I see rabbits by the dozen, but not one chicken.
Boars are not rare. And as I have said I see rabbits by the dozen.
Note that Just survive had space ships listed but didn't appear anywhere in game. Just because it is on a list doesn't mean it actually spawns.
Game is just vanilla solo, I haven't set or reset anything.
With all the gripes and repeated threads on the same subject I have to wonder why people are so quick to defend the game and blame the player? Chicken spawns are broke and it is not up to me to recode the game to fix them.
They ether need to fix the spawn or remove the challenges, period.
I usually end up eventually stumbling across a chicken here and there, but not this current play through. I've got probably 30 hours into this map, too.
Ok, if you say so. I also play vanilla solo, plenty of chickens on my side, but i guess because you can't see one then they must not exist because your always right. Even if 10 people say otherwise.

We're only about 10% into the file, but I think you get the point.
You can then look up all of the groups in spawning.xml
And though there is a huge NDA on talking about a19, I am positive it's ok to say we still have chickens there too.
And if Just survive was still on my rig I could show you the code that lists space ships and rayguns in a game, that didn't exist in game. Some trigger is broke and chickens simply are not spawning in my game. Them spawning for some one else doesn't fix the broken spawn for me. I have been all over this for a few days, including googling the crap out of it. This seems to be a pretty common issue.
Bet you can find 10 people that swear they have seen aliens too.
I'm not seeing them because they simply are not spawning in my game, why is that so hard to understand?
If chickens were as easy to find as say rabbits, bears, wolves, dogs, pigs ect there wouldn't be 6 pages of threads by people having the same issue.
And I'll quit this before I start over again at 210 hours because of a well known game glitch.
Hell I quit this after 10 hours 2 years ago because it was a laggy, crashing, freezing, bugged out pile of... I wouldn't be playing as much as I have if all that hadn't been fixed.
I can honestly say that in 7 years, I've never seen even a handful of threads about missing chickens. Much less 6 pages worth.
