Gyrocopter
I just started flying my first gyrocopter and was super excited at the premise of having a flying machine in 7d2d. After spending about an hour flying around the map to get familiar with the controls I've decided I think they're horrible. my big question is why they tried to rework the helicopter control scheme that almost every other game with a helicopter uses, WASD for normal 2D movement and a up button and down button. they way the controls are now it feels more like a airplane than a helicopter, I have to do a rolling takeoff, and an approach for landing.

The key word here is GYROcopter and not HELIcopter. Gyrocopters have to do that, as they depend on enough airflow to turn the overhead rotor.

This. Gyrocopters are the predecessor of helicopters- They're somewhere between typical aircraft and a helicopter.

Sorry you don't like the gyrocopter- But it's pretty accurate to how a real gyrocopter would be controlled.

gyrocopter has its place in the lineup. the control scheme is weird, and you'd think they would have a little more built-in stability for not immediately crashing if you take your hands off the controls for RL reasons.

It's pretty fast and is the champion of rough, uneven, or impassable terrain and is my groups' premiere 'trader run' vehicle. It's also nearly immune to falling damage, which seems to be a patch-job on the larger issue of it's flight unwieldiness.

Like others have stated, becouse its NOT a helicopter

The controls are extremely close to how an actual gyro flies. I've flown one.

I never flown a real one before but this one is quite nice to fly. Patience is key to flying it really well. I've already done perfect landings on top of the loot areas in factories and trader settlements with one.

Took me a while to learn it, but once done, it’s pretty easy to fly.

Just a note - don’t try to land, point at the ground about where you want to go, and hit e when you’re right above the spot and not too high. With impact bracing mod in your boots, you can jump out like this and park on a dime every time as long as you’re lower than a couple of stories up.

Secondly, taking off requires a run up - as mentioned, it’s a gyrocopter not a helicopter, so try to face in a good direction when putting it down, or pick it up and place it if you have the inventory space - turning it when you’re in a tight spot just causes frustration, as the wheels get caught on everything. If it didn’t have this unweildiness, it would basically be a god-vehicle, and there would never be a point to the bike or truck.

Gyrocopter Flying Controls

I'll tell you where I had all of my problems with the gyrocopter: Trying to control everything on one hand, as the developers originally set it up. It was just too awkward and difficult. So I decided to simplify it: I moved the pitch controls (how you control the nose of the aircraft, whether it's pointing up, down, or straight ahead) to my left and right mouse buttons. Now it's extremely easy to take off, fly, and land.

To change your settings, go to "options," select "controls," then go to the "vehicles" tab. Change "hop" to your right mouse button, and change " brake" to your left mouse button. Press your left mouse button to point the nose up (to gain altitude and to take off); press your right mouse button to point the nose down (to lower your altitude and to land). That's it!

Also, you can land the gyrocopter like a helicopter—almost on a dime once you practice enough. Pick a spot where you want to land, cut the power (stop moving forward), then press your left turn button (which is typically the "A" key) while simultaneously picking up your mouse, then putting it down and moving it to the left multiple times. This will essentially put the gyrocopter into a circular spin, in place. You will slowly make your way to the ground and land like a helicopter.

Hope this can help out anyone else having the same problems that I did!

yall are talking ♥♥♥♥ about the gyrocopter, and here i am unable to get a push bike *ding ding*, but seriously i would love to get further then 7/14 days into the game

The secret of a good landing is a good approach. I have seen too many players push a bad descent and totally mess up the landing. If it doesn't look or feel good, just go around and line it up again. Practice is the key and a gradual descent to a touchdown point.

Interesting to note, possibly, is that you can actually glide in gyros, by leaning them forward. That said, gyrocopter's lift is provided in a similar means to a plane wing, the turning of the top propeller is entirely the result of air flowing through it, only the prop on the back is powered, so it makes sense that if you don't have them moving forward they'll lose lift and/or stability.

All you have to do to make the gyro control with one hand is leftclick, it unbinds the camera from the gyro's control scheme (also does it to all other vehicles)

That's because they got it right. A gyrocopter is a rotary wing airplane. Not a VTOL. The blade on top is a airfoil wing, not a powered rotor. A quick google can explain it to you. But the tl;dr version is they fly very similar to fixed wing airplanes.

As others have already pointed out, Unfortunately, this is a case of "getting your hopes up". You saw copter and thought helicopter and got your mind fixed on wanting that. For a long time I was victim of this as well, and refused to use it. Honestly, it didnt even feel any faster than the motorcycle or 4x4, and it was thirsty af in the gas department.

In truth, gas isnt an issue in A18, as Oil shale is so abundantly found. After I started using it, I realized how useful it was. Travel was more free, and I discovered many things about my world that I could only see from the height that the gyro provided. Its a great scouting tool, that lets you see far away.

Yep, this is very true. I cleared the trees in my forest base to make a path for approach. I can land it on the 5x5 platform I placed for it, and thanks to the height of that platform, can take off from it as well.
