Blood moon spawns inside base
Just saying

Had a nice base setup for the blood moon and watch in horror as all the zombies including giant zombie bear was spawning inside the base. Would be nice if the moon spawns would spawn a lot further away.

Just saying

I would guess you must have a very large base. Or maybe elongated. I have not had it happen, but I suppose it is possible.

That's exactly what a taffer would say.

How big of a base do you have..?

In any case, The zombies currently spawn around 50~ blocks out from your location, ish. Given the default zombie spawn total of 8, if they spawned much further than that, you'd basically only ever have one or two zombies active at your door, and the other 6-7 way out away from your base on their way back from respawning, just taking up pathing space for no real reason. Spawning them such a distance away too would require more active loading of those regions rather than just having it prepped and ready for you to travel into them; And also would require increasing the size of the AI's pathing grid to compensate (since blood moon hordes always know where you are; their pathing area must be large enough to contain the player from the range at which they spawn.), which would increase performance costs of the AI.

It's just.. Not really a good deal to make them spawn further away, in any aspect.

Just another rant post without any details to help us explain you what happened...

So, if you are in a deep cave base. Will the blood moon horde spawn in the ground 50 blocks from ya or just spawn above trying to dig to you?

Above, and they will absolutely dig down to you. Even if you make a big hollow room, i dont think they can spawn underground (Never really tested though.)

It was a small enough base. They spawned right in the middle around 15 blocks away. Saw it with my own eye around 6 to 7 in one shot spawn.

Doesn't the LCB stop zombies from spawning in it's radius?

Yea, but the blood moon horde is immune to its effects. I think screamer spawns might be too.

Correct. The LCB and Bedroll have only ever stopped POI spawns. Biome, screamer, and bloodmoon spawns are not affected by them.

Oh, thanks for the info. Then what stops blood moon spawns, player proximity?

Zombies cannot spawn on a player placed block. Pave the inside of your base with block that you place. I have done a full base with just wooden frames and it keeps zombies from spawning inside the walls and forces them to spawn outside. Be very careful with weapons though since frames have little to no hp's and can be destroyed easily by a missed shot. This will then open up your base to inside spawns again. The wet concrete slabs makes a wonderful thin layer that stops zombie spawning dead in it's tracks. Zombies will also not spawn on farm plots, they require some form of dirt block to spawn out of. All other player placed blocks will halt zombie spawns.

I built a base in A16 with a 4000 X 4000 cement paved area (4 forges and 4 mixers devoted to cement) and never had to worry about a zombie EVER. They would spawn, the odd one would wander over, but my auto turrets would annihilate any single zombies. Blood moons... just remove a 5X5 area and ALL zombies would spawn out of that area. It was also a very effective way to block Screamer spawns. After the blood moon was over, I just filled in the 5x5 area with frames and never had to worry about a single screamer ever.

Interesting take on this. Thanks for the info

This has not been true since like Alpha 7.

Before Alpha 17 you could just fill the void with frames and then pick it up to kill the sleeper blocks, but that went away with the new volumes.
