Catwalk bridge
Hey
Is it pheasable/possible to lay a simple cat walk to an island (over water). I tried a few catwalks but after about five it collapsed, is it possible in any way to do or are you stopped due to not being able to put support pillars?
Havent tried much yet as in very early stages of game.
Thanks

Not really without pillars, 5 or so is the best you can do without.

Thanks, is it possible to place pillars in water?

Sure, you can put any block in water.

Just to add, the longest you can do without pillars seems to be 12, with 2 drawbridges (2 X 6)

the game really needs a funtion of lowering pillars into water as of now if the water is to deep forget about placing support pillars for your bridge making a large lake bridge a pipe dream or a huge risk of repeated drowning.

There are ways to build air pockets as you go into deeper water so you can survive longer to accomplish what you want to do.

You can always go into god mode while underwater. I've done this to get deep crates. There aren't cheating police watching you - do what you want to enjoy the game.

well that is if you done cheat or use bugs of diffrent kind.

I've done it with a pillar every 5th piece, it sure beat driving around that lake miniature ocean all the time. lol Uping your athletics skill will help you hold your breath longer if it is too deep and that becomes an issue.

@OP

Just use iron frames...span 14 then use a pillar.

Technically you can span 14 with wood frames, but you need a PHD in building.

I'd say more is better, for the sole reason if one breaks you don't lose so much of the span.

Which got me thinking how about the let us make floating dock type bridges. Something made of wood with empty red barels attached to the underside. If they get that in then boats would be a nice lead in from there too...

Sure, but for being a water bridge you really shouldnt loose any pillars...upgraded scrap iron is rather tough, and its not like he is using it for a base platform or anything.

Also you'd probably make it 2x wide, so you'd have 2 pillars per span.

you can use wooden support beams to extend range. ive cross between buildings useing just the building them selves and zero pillars. BUT ive noticed some thing weird. on one side of a building i build a catwalk straight across and was fine. when i went to increase width to 3... i did excact same layout and it failed?

then i moved a little away and build a new one and used LESS supports and it spanned furthure?? im not sure whats going on. but seems works one time and not next. if need i can rebuild a sample as i restated server so can SS now. but it was atleast 20+ if not 25+ span.

Sometimes, you are allowed to build what i call 'unstable buildings'.

You build the thing, no problem for a while, then, one day, without any apparent reason, it collapses.

It has happened more than a few times to me, especially with my roof farms, works for days if not weeks, then, one day it collapses.
I take extreme care now with more pillars than trully needed ;D
